Pancake Bay Provincial Park

Friday October 19... 7:30pm

We had a huge thunder and lightning storm last night. We were playing cribbage at about 9pm when there was a big crack of lightening and that sent us towards the back window looking out the at the lightening flashes while watching the rain pour
down. It lasted for about half an hour. Then, there was a train that came across the bridge and it kept starting and stopping and every time it made huge crashing noises. Thankfully, it didn't last long, and we had another good nights sleep.

There was some blue sky this morning and we went for a walk on the trail on the other side of the locks. Not a long walk...maybe 2 km's or so. Then, it was off to the Shell station to put $177 worth of gasoline (at $1.049 per litre) in Sherman, and empty the holding tanks. The GPS unit got us there with no problem, and it also pointed us in the direction of the laundrymat which was located in a shopping mall.

After doing laundry, it was around 1pm when we headed out of Sault Ste Marie towards Wawa Ontario. We wanted to stop near Pancake Bay Provincial Park where we had gone for a hike to a really nice lookout about 3 years ago when we had been in this area for Alex's baseball. The weather looked like it might co-operate, so we stopped at the trailhead around 2:30pm. They have some new signs up that say it's a 6 km hike roundtrip to the lookout and back, and that it should take 2-3 hours. The sign at the start said the bear sightings were rated "medium" so we felt okay with that. Besides, Whiskey would protect us!...lol. Actually, we thought that if we met a big bear, he would have Whiskey for an appetizer, Kevin would be the main course, and Ruth would be dessert. The lookout was beautiful, but we could see rain approaching us fairly quickly so we turned to head back. Did the 6 km's in an hour and a half.

Had a great supper. Using the gas oven works really well, and Ruth even made blueberry muffins in it yesterday.

After our hike, we had thought about driving on towards Lake Superior Provincial Park, but the place we are parked at the trailhead seems like a nice spot to stay for the evening. There's nobody around, so we don't think anybody will give us a bad time about parking here for the night. It's raining again now, so may have a game of backgammon or two before calling it a night.
