Nk'Mip RV Park (day 2)

Monday November 19...9:30pm

The Nk'Mip RV Park is one of the 9 businesses in the area that are owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band. The chief of this band is a business savvy guy who claims that other native bands should be more proactive in managing their economic affairs.

We went for a walk on a trail that leads to the new Indian Cultural Centre that opened about a year ago. That business is also part of the Nk'Mip Wine Cellar...the first aboriginal vineyard in North America. They've also recently completed a condo development and a golf course, as well as being part owners of the local ski hill. It's impressive to see the stuff these guys are doing and sure makes you wonder how much money is totally wasted with other native groups. Especially since none of the businesses the Osoyoos band operates has anything to do with gambling. Tomorrow we'll go take the tour of the cultural centre (thanks Mom!) and go for a hike on the private Indian lands up to the "Chief's Lookout". Couldn't go today because we had Whiskey with us (there's no dogs allowed), so she'll have to stay behind with Sherman tomorrow.

Snakes around here...it is a desert, after all...

From the Indian Cultural Centre you can see the RV park at the bottom of the vineyard, and the town of Osoyoos in the distance

Spent some more time getting our Mexico trip figured out. I'm going to fly to Manzanillo from Vancouver on December 4th, the same day that Ruth's brother Colin is going to show up in Vancouver to drive down to the Mexican border with Ruth and Sherman. I'm staying at a cheap all-inclusive until the 10th, when I'll find my way to the nearby town of Colima and hop on a plane to Tijuana in order to meet Ruth and Sherman at the border when they enter Mexico. It all sounds a little complicated, but it will be well worth it in order to spend a few months in Mexico.

Our little electric heater gave up yesterday, so we rode our bikes into town again today to buy another one. Got the cheapest one they had for $20 at Home Hardware, and it seems to work fine. It's only good for keeping the temperature consistent during the day without using the propane furnace. We pretty much have to use the propane at night because the built in system also provides some heat to the compartments that house the water lines. And it's already -3 outside as I write this, and it's supposed to go down to -6 tonight, and -8 tomorrow night. That's no problem, because it warms up to +5 during the day, and we're nice and warm at night with the furnace on.
