Thursday December 27...9:15pm
We've been doing a little bit of route planning today. We still want to continue south to Cabo San Lucas, the very southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. But that means doing another 1,000 km's (600 miles) of driving before getting on
the ferry to mainland Mexico. So if we are going to do that, we probably will not get on the ferry until sometime shortly after January 15th. The ferry will take us from La Paz to Mazatlan, and then we will continue south down the pacific coast to Manzanillo before heading inland at Colima and then north east past Guadalajara and up to Texas by the end of February. At least that's the plan as it stands now...things are open to change!
We decided to take Sherman into Mulege. Now that we've decided to stay at least until January 1st, we needed some more supplies and because we don't yet have any kind of solar panels, our house batteries were getting low. So going for the drive enabled us to pick up what we needed and charge the batteries to give us enough power for another couple of days. I can now see the benefit of getting at least one solar panel for when we are parked in one spot for an extended period of time. We could use our built in generator, but it doesn't do a very efficient job of charging the batteries, and it's noisy and costs money to run. On the other hand, you can run the generator for a long time for the cost of the one solar panel. There's a trade off either way, I suppose.
So we went into town. We parked Sherman on the outskirts and walked in to the laundromat and grocery store becuase the streets in town are fairly narrow and not the easiest to navigate with a motorhome. We were carrying a few items, and were walking past a parked truck when the guy inside said hello...it was one of the guys from our beach. He saw us struggling to carry everything and he volunteered to bring our groceries back to the beach for us so that we could go get our laundry and not have to carry everything all at once while walking back to Sherman. Nice people here.
On the way back, we stopped at a restaurant at a nearby beach area. Most of the long term people are going to this restaurant for New Years Eve and we've decided to join them, so we needed to make reservations. For $22 each you get your meal, a couple of drinks, and music. And so we're going to drive to that beach and spend the night there in our motorhomes.
