Ruth's post - Lost Hills, California

Ruth and Colin's day - Saturday, December 8th

Woke up this morning to sunshine, what a nice change. It was a little on the chilly side, needed to put the furnace on for a short while just to take the chill out of the air.

Checked out the Wal-Mart to see if they could do an oil change on Sherman, but they didn't have a bay big enough, but we were told that their new store in Anderson, 10 miles down the road (the direction we are going) has a bay big enough, so that's where we headed to.  It was early enough in the morning that we didn`t have to wait, they could do it right away and it was only $46.  Bought our breakfast at the Subway to speed things up, that way we could get straight back on the road.

Putting on lots of miles today, may even try to get through Los Angeles late tonight when traffic is quiet, then sleep on the other side before meeting up with Glenys(Glen) and Steve in San Diego.  Everything is going well, nice and sunny, beautiful scenery in the valley, lots of orchards and even rice fields. I realized we had one more mountain pass to go through, just before hitting Los Angeles. Its dark now, we stopped for dinner and figured we would go thru the pass then stop on the other side and have a sleep for a few hours and then drive through Los Angeles in the wee hours of the morning.

Not going to happen!  Just before Lost Hills, there was the dreaded sign that tells us the Tejon Pass at Grapevine on the I-5 is closed due to the snow and they weren`t sure when it would re-open.  So we pulled into the little town of Lost Hills and sleep at the side of the road beside a truck stop with everyone else. We decided to wake up early and see if the pass is opened if not the we have to detour again.
