Day 4 at Bayou Segnette

Friday February 29...9:30am

Had another quiet night, but the construction noise started sometime between 7am - 7:30am. It was cloudy and windy out, but when I went to take Whiskey for a walk later in the morning, it was actually warmer than I thought it would be. I had my jacket on, but ended up having to take it off.

Took Whiskey for a walk around the park and the day use area. We ended up being out for 2 hours, I wasn't walking the entire time as I got talking to a gentleman that was fishing along the nature trail which runs beside the bayou. He was an interesting man to talk to, he had lost his house during Katrina and moved away for a while, but then decided to come back. He actually owned a number of properties, and some of them have to be torn down completely.

A look at the bayou from the nature trail

The end of the nature trail, brought me to the construction area, up by the cabins that the park rents out. I got talking to a couple of the foremen and they are making the levee bigger and stronger. I found out the the park itself didn't get any damage from Katrina or Rita, but the cabins which are right on the bayou were damaged from Rita and they will all be torn down and new ones built but on a special floating platform. These cabins are on the other side of the levee. One of the foreman said that when we start heading to Mississippi and in Mississippi, that is where we will see the extent of damage from Katrina.

It seems like New Orleans is bouncing back but there is still a lot that needs to be done. It seems that every night on the news there is always something being said about Katrina and the problems that they are still having. Many people are still fighting with the insurance companies for their money and when they do get some, it is just a small amount, not nearly enough to cover their losses.

I might try heading downtown again either tomorrow or Sunday, but I am not sure about it. The bus system has a lot to be desired and my feet are still sore, which I found out today after coming back from my long walk with Whiskey.

I heard from Kevin earlier today, and he and Alex made it to Boston. He got to the airport with 20 minutes to spare, but it sounds like things went well today at the school.
