Lake George State Forest

Tuesday March 11...10:30pm

Whiskey hasn't got used to the time changes yet, so we didn't get up until after 7:30am. Looked like it was going to be a nice day, because it was already 19C inside Sherman.

We got on the road fairly early in order to stop where we could get internet and have some breakfast then. Justin and Lindsey went to call his Dad and let him know they arrived safely, while Ruth made pancakes and I checked the email.

We took the slow road that runs alongside the ocean down from Jacksonville Beach to Ormond Beach, just a couple of miles north of Daytona Beach. We stopped for a break at a roadside parking area by the beach. We stopped again for lunch in a little town just before the state park we were heading for. Then, the GPS unit took us on a side road towards the state park which turned out not to be suited to an RV...it had a height restriction of 8'6" due to low hanging tree branches! So we had to do about a 10 mile detour around that section. Then, when we finally got to the park, it was full! So we headed inland another 30 miles or so towards Oscala National Forest, but a few miles before that, I spotted a sign with a little tent on it saying there was camping at the Lake George State Forest area. So we headed down this little dirt road to a section where there was a sort of a sign by a gate, but if you wanted to camp you were supposed to go get a permit back at the main office about 5 miles away. I thought that was dumb, so we carried on to the campground anyhow. There are a couple of other guys in tents here, but that's it.

So we went for a walk down to the riverfront and hiked on their trails and saw some alligators from a distance. By the time we got back to the campsite it was about 7pm. Got there, and the gate was locked! This is fine for the evening, but obviously means that the ranger guy knows we are here, and likely will want us to pay before we leave...which we have no problem with, we just think they should make it easier to do so.

And it did turn out to be a nice day....a bit cloudy, but fairly warm...even now, the temperature at our bedside is 26C.
