Lancaster, New Hampshire

Wednesday May 28…10:30pm

Knock, knock, knock…was the sound we heard at 6:45am this morning! And of course Whiskey the guard dog came to attention and began barking furiously. Ruth got up and answered the door. This is the first time ever we’ve had the
cops banging on the door. It turns out the groundskeeping crew at the University had called the police on us! Not sure why they didn’t just come over and talk to us themselves, but at least they are vigilant, I suppose. The officer said he ran our license plate earlier, and it checked out fine, so he let us sleep in. Once we explained our situation, and that the baseball coach had said he thought it was okay, the cop became more friendly.

We were up, so we decided to get on the road. It was only a few miles from where we were parked to the ferry terminal across Lake Champlain. It’s only a 12 minute boat ride, yet the fare was $19.40 However in this instance it’s cost effective for us because it would have cost much more in gas to drive around the lake. It’s finally a nice day, with lots of sunshine…but still fairly windy.

We stopped at about 11:00am where the “Long Trail” crosses the highway. We’re guessing this hiking trail is at least 300 km’s long, starting at the Quebec border and ending halfway through Vermont at the Appalacian Trail. They had a parking area there, so we went for a hike. We made it as far as Prospector’s Rock, an outlook that gives a nice view. We hiked about an hour each way, and probably did about 5.5 km’s total.

We found a cheap campground from the website freecampgrounds.com that was along our route. So much for making it through May without any overnight costs! But, it was only $10 and came with electricity and water, and it was right along our route. It’s actually a nice little spot where a guy has made a campground in his backyard. There’s about 10 sites, but it’s pretty far back from the road, and I don’t think we’ll hear any noise. We are right on the border of Vermont and New Hampshire, just before Lancaster, New Hampshire.

May Fuel $ 275.57 ($150 in Sherman and $95.57 in our little car which we use while at Ruth’s parents)
