On the road again...

Monday May 26….8:30pm

Well it does feel good to get on the road again! We enjoyed our time at Ruth’s parents, but now it’s time to go visit our daughter Lindsey and her boyfriend Justin who live in New Minas, Nova Scotia. We’re going to take the route through upstate New York to Plattsburgh, and then on through Maine. Both fuel and beer are much cheaper in the United States!

Today, we left Galetta Ontario at about 12:30pm and drove through to the east end of Ottawa where we picked up a few things that were stored at my sister Alison’s house. It was a cloudy day, and spitting rain on and off. We were going to stay in the east end of Ottawa overnight, but we decided it was still early enough so we drove on to Cornwall Ontario where we found a nice little park by the St. Lawrence River where we took Whiskey for a walk and had our supper.

We’re parked up at Walmart in Cornwall, and will cross the bridge to New York state tomorrow morning. We would have gone over this evening, but it’s Memorial Day in America, so we thought the border might be extra busy.

We’ve used on average, $600 of gasoline every month that we’ve been travelling since last October. Some people have mentioned to us that we must be concerned about the rising costs associated with that, but really we’re not. We were talking with someone the other day who said she spends $75 a week ($300 a month) driving to and from her job. And she has to stare at the same sights each and every day. So we spend double that, and get to see the entire continent! And we don’t have a mortgage or property taxes or any of the other costs associated with a house…so no, we’re not concerned about the price of fuel.

Besides, when we started out last October, gas was about $1.01 per litre averaged out for our entire trip across Canada. Now, we will be driving through the U.S., and even with the higher prices here, and taking into account the better exchange rate, our costs for gas will be about…$1.01 per litre. So it feels like gas hasn’t gone up at all over the last 6 months!
