Antigonish, Nova Scotia

Tuesday June 10…10:45pm

We drove on to Liscomb Mills this morning. There isn’t really anything there except for a resort lodge type of place. Quite a few of the “communities” along this eastern shore don’t really have very much there to call it a community. The place names are on the map, but you get there and sometimes there isn’t
anything there! You see the road sign announcing the place, and there’s just a couple of houses. Too funny. Anyhow, this resort hooks onto a few hiking trails, one of which is the 10 km trail up to the Liscomb River Fish Ladder. This is a man made system for the Atlantic salmon to get upriver. I guess the original system was destroyed when they build a hydro station at this location many years ago, which is now in ruins. So this man made system to fix it for the fish was completed in 1979. The trail is supposed to go up one side of the river, across a suspension bridge, and back down the other side of the river. But we weren’t sure where the trail started on the one side, and ended up following the old road that led to the hydro station. Anyhow, we did get there and then took the actual trail back the other side. The trail was in pretty rough shape in spots, but it’s more natural that way. Not much wildlife around, other than birds…and Ruth spotted a little snake that was about 10 inches long.

Then we drove into the town of Sherbrooke and used the library internet. They have a sort of an 1800’s type of tourist village here (much like Upper Canada Village near Ottawa) but I find out online that they want $10 to get in and it takes about 2 hours to tour it. No thanks.

On the road up to Antigonish, we found a nice roadside park to have supper at. It’s beside a lake, and we’re tempted to stay the night despite the “no camping” and “park closes at dusk” signs. In fact, the only reason we didn’t was there was nowhere suitably level to park. So we drove on to Antigonish (pop 4,300), and are parked at the Walmart for the night. We’re the only ones here except for a pickup truck pulling a travel trailer.
