Quebec City

Sunday August 17…8:30pm

We woke up in the Walmart parking lot at about 6:30am, and it was pouring rain outside. We figured that the first thing we should do is check the weather forecast, so we got moved down the road to be
able to check the internet. Oddly enough, despite the pouring rain they were calling for sunny with cloudy breaks and a high of 24C with only a 10% chance of rain in the afternoon. And it turned out that’s exactly what we got.

We made it down to the ferry parking lot at about 8am, and as I expected it was pretty quiet. We parked up in the area where there were 4 spots marked off specifically for motorhomes...and 3 of them were taken already. There was no attendant on duty, so from reading the signs we figured out how to use the machine to get a parking tag. One of the other RV’s was leaving and the guy asked me if I wanted to use his tag as it still had lots of time left for the day, but it was marked with what kind of vehicle he had, so we thanked him for his efforts and declined. This guy had said he tried twice to get the machine to print him a ticket and said he couldn’t get it to work, but I found that it took my $20 with no problem at all.

We took the ferry over at about 11am. It was turning out to be a nice day. Whiskey attracted a fair bit of attention on the boat and we’re assuming that even though dogs are allowed, not many people take them on the boat. She was a little skittish, but I carried her on and off, and she was fine. When we arrived at the Quebec City side, we first looked for the tourist info because we wanted the pamphlet and map guide for the free walking tour. Finally found it, and I waited for my number to be called (about 15 minutes) in order to be served with the free information. As it turned out, we didn’t do their actual self guided tour, but we did walk around the “walled” area of Quebec City using the guide to point out to ourselves what the attractions were.

I can definitely see the attraction of “old Quebec”. In fact, if we were to live anywhere in Quebec that we have visited so far, I think this would probably be the place. The historic part of the city, built into the hills overlooking the river has a very European feel to it.

We spent about 3 ½ hours wandering around, and then took the ferry back to Levis Quebec where Sherman was parked 2 minutes walk from the dock. We relaxed for an hour or so and then Ruth and I went for a 10 km bike ride along the river. This side used to have a railway track along the river and they’ve turned it into a multi use paved trail that is very well used by bikers, joggers, walkers, and roller bladers.
