Hunnewell, Missouri

Tuesday October 28…10:15pm

The temperature outside last night made it down to -3.3C (25F). We have a digital remote thermometer that we normally keep in the fridge, so on nights when I’m curious, I put the remote on the doorstep outside so we can see how cold it got overnight. But we were nice and toasty because of our little electric heater.

We took advantage of the electricity and did a quick vacuum this morning before leaving the campground.

Our gasoline level was getting low, but I had purposely planned that we would need fuel by the time we crossed into Missouri. Gas prices are really low just now in the midwest states, so we wanted to be able to fill up there. When we crossed the Mississippi River in Quincy, Illinois, we missed our planned exit, and our GPS recalculated a new route for us through a very rural area. This would have been fine, but we needed fuel and it didn’t look like there were any filling stations along this route. So we headed back towards the main road. Sure enough, we ended up getting gas for $2.35 a gallon (about 77 cents per litre CAN).

So now that we had sufficient fuel, we did take a more rural route. As we were getting close to our destination of Macon, Missouri we saw a sign pointing to a conservation area. I noticed the lake wasn’t much off our road so thought maybe we could go for a hike there. As we got closer, we saw that they allowed camping…and the sign said “CAMPING IS FREE”. We like Missouri!

We really like rule number 1!

Kevin, Ruth, Whsikey, and Sherman on a beautiful day

It was a beautiful clear day, so I gave Sherman a quick sponge bath while Ruth sat in the sun. Afterwards, we went on a nearby hiking trail, but it was not a well maintained trail. I don’t think people around here hike…they hunt and they fish, but they don’t hike.

We didn’t travel as far as we wanted to today, but we sure had a nice day. And we are the only ones camped here, so we will have a peaceful nights sleep. But it’s getting cold again…temperature as I write this is 29F (-1.2C).

Total nights sleeping in a motorhome…372

October Fuel $433.11

October Grocery $298.19

October Overnight costs $ 15.00
