Boca Chica Beach, Texas

Friday November 14…10:30pm

Did some shopping at the Walmart. Got oil and filter for Sherman, because I’ll have to do that sometime soon. And picked up a lot of grocery items that we are stocking up on because they may not be readily available in Mexico.

We drove into Brownsville and stopped at the insurance place. After asking about insurance for Central America, we have decided to stick with Mexico for this winter. It was going to take a week just to get an accurate quote, and then about 3 weeks to mail you the policy. And it was going to be more expensive than what we thought, although she couldn’t guess without us filling out the form and her sending it in for a quote. Most people who drive through Central America must do it without insurance. We think that whenever we make it down there to tour around, we will do it with backpacks and public transportation.

So we are all now set with Mexican insurance. We’ve decided to enter Mexico on Tuesday morning, and for now will head about 25 miles (40 km’s) east to Boca Chica beach. It’s a long stretch of sandy beach that is partially owned by the State Parks system, but there are absolutely no facilities. We are camped on the beach, but not far off the road leading in because there was a storm through here recently and the sand is still soft in spots.

I rode my bike about 2.3 miles (3.7 km’s) down the beach, but turnd around because it didn’t seem like I was getting anywhere. Not too many people around, although there is the odd fisherman trying his luck from the shore.

    1. I has been many years since we have camped by the beach in Texas and not sure what is available anymore as rules and laws can change over the years. I do know that Magnolia Beach still has free camping so you could google that one and get lots of info about it and where it is. A couple of other websites to check out would be www.ultimatecampgrounds.com and freecampsites.net. Hope this will help you out.
