Happy New Year from Sacbe

Thursday January 1…9:30pm

Happy New Year!

Whiskey let us sleep in for a bit, and we didn’t get up until 7:45.

We filled up our fresh water from a hose at Carmen’s place, and said our goodbye’s. It was fun staying with somebody who actually lives in Cancun, and away from the hotel and tourist area. Thanks Carmen!

We then travelled through the hotel zone and further south towards Playa Del Carmen. Not much traffic on the road, because it was still fairly early and it was a holiday. We were looking for possible beach parking spots, but this whole area has become full of resorts and it’s pretty much impossible to find a free spot for overnight RV camping. There are a couple of actual campgrounds past Playa Del Carmen, but because they have prime property, we are hearing that they charge close to $30 US per night. We will not likely be going there.

I had contacted another couchsurfer who lives just before Playa Del Carmen. Lynn is a Canadian from Vancouver who came down here to visit 12 years ago, and never went back. She lives in the community of Sacbe which is on the “jungle” side of the highway, about 3 km’s in. It’s a very rustic spot, but beautiful with flowers and trees and they even have several of their own cenotes for swimming. The houses are all done in very rustic style and are all self sufficient with solar panels for electric and composting toilets. The roads are very narrow, and we had to hold some tree branches out of the way in order for us to get in here, but now that we’re here, it’s well worth it. S&G aren’t so keen, it’s a little too much in the bush for them, but Ruth and I think it’s a beautiful spot.

Walking through the jungle pathway

In the afternoon, Ruth and I hopped on the bikes and rode across the highway to the beach. There are some public access roads to get to the beach, but otherwise it is pretty much resort after resort. The road we went down led us to a public area, but nowhere was there a spot where a motorhome could park for the night. As we walked down the beach, there was a very expensive looking small hotel and I went and asked about using their parking lot for a couple of nights. They didn’t think there would be a problem. I think this is their website… www.hotellereve.com but they have a generator near the parking lot, and it might be too noisy overnight. The only other spot we saw was a restaurant that advertised “camping” but it was more geared towards tent camping. The owner was very accomodating though, and even volunteered to cut down a few trees so that we would have access! We find the Mexicans to be VERY helpful. Possibly tomorrow, Lynn will take us for a drive in her jeep, and we can check out a few more possible spots. We now think that staying near Playa Del Carmen is not possible, because it has grown so much in the 6 years since Ruth and I last visited the area.

We played cards with S&G in the evening, and now we’re calling it an early night.
