Xpu-Ha Beach (day 8)

Saturday January 10…10:15pm

This morning, we walked north up the beach, towards a point where there is another resort which has been abandoned due to hurricane damage in 2005.

They have a guard stationed there, and we had been told by others that the guard would not let you pass. But then we had someone else tell us that there is a lagoon and cenote system over that way and that if you tell the guard you are from a certain hotel, he would let you in. Well, we walked over there (and had Whiskey with us) and I shook his hand and said a few words in Spanish. He said a few things that I didn’t understand, and then spoke into his walkie talkie set. It sounded to me like he was telling someone that a few tourists would be coming through, and then he waved us on through.

So there was a section where a lagoon was formed and was still salt water, and then further inland there was a section where it was fresh water from a cenote system that fed itself into the lagoon. All very pretty, and hardly anybody around, although there were also a few tourists from a resort on the other side of the lagoon.

After lunch, someone started a “circle party” and before you knew it, there were quite a few people sitting around drinking a few beers and wasting the afternoon away. It was kind of a fun way to spend our last day with these people, even though it looks like we may bump into some of them again further on in our travels.

Played euchre with S&G this evening.

May not have much internet access over the next few days as we leave here tomorrow morning and head towards a friends place a little north of Chetumal near the Belize border.
