Lexington, Kentucky

Thursday April 16…10:30pm

Not a bad sleep at the Walmart, except for the parking lot cleaning machine doing it’s job at 3am. Oh well…what do you expect for free! But the noise didn’t last long, and otherwise it was fine.

We were aiming to get to the “Four Roses” bourbon distillery in time for their 9am tour, but we realized it wasn’t going to happen. So we took our time and Ruth picked up a couple of things at Walmart before we left. Made it to the distillery at about 10:30am so we did the 11am tour. We’ve done quite a few distillery and brewery tours, and some are good and others are not…this was one of the better ones because they actually took you right into where they make the stuff and let you sam ple the product at various stages. It was only us another young couple with their little children, so it was fun to do it with such a small group.

Each one of these vats holds 16,500 gallons of future bourbon

The yeast is making this stuff bubble like crazy...

The "Four Roses" distillery has been operating here for 130 years

Then we drove to Lexington, Kentucky and the Keeneland Horse Track. This is the first time we’ve ever been to a real horse race with the jockeys…not harness racing. They only race here two months a year and it’s a large facility. With it being a Thursday afternoon I didn’t expect it would be very busy, but it was busier than I thought it would have been. We were told later that a lot of people will finish work early to go to the races and that it’s a big deal around here…this is horse country. And many people will get dressed up to go to the races, and we noticed that as well, although anything goes.

So we bet on 5 different races…and we won 3 and lost 2…ended up down $2.80, plus our $5 each entrace fee. It was a fun afternoon.

A day at the races...what a fancy scoreboard!

This "bridge" is actually a wall mural...

More horse country

From there, it was only 3 miles to our couchsurfing hosts in Lexington. We had stayed with Sara and her mom Anne a few years ago when we had come down to this area for one of Alex’s baseball games. They said we were more than welcome to park in front of their house for a night.

Anne and her husband Ed came in to say hi this evening, and we chatted for an hour or so.

Heading north again tomorrow. Not a bad day today though…cloudy in the morning, but sunny this afternoon and a high about 65F (18C).

Total nights sleeping in a motorhome…536
