Unforgettable Places

Ruth's Dad gave us two books for Christmas.

One is called "Unforgettable Places", and is a pictorial description of 80 unique sights and experiences around the world...from adventure filled walks and breath taking hikes to secluded beaches and ruins that have been around for thousands of years.

Here are some examples from the book...
  • Zambian rivers to raft
  • A volcano in Guatemala to climb
  • The Milford Track in New Zealand
  • Torres del Paine, Chile
  • Coyote Buttes, Arizona and Utah
  • The Golden Temple, Amritsar, India
  • Angkor Wat, Cambodia
  • Festival of the Sahara, Tunisia
  • Karnak Temple, Luxor, Egypt
  • Santorini, Greece
  • Fallingwater, Pennsylvania
  • Machu Picchu, Peru
  • Samarkand, Uzbekistan
  • Amalfi Coast, Italy
  • Drovers' Roads, Spain
  • King Ludwig's Way, Germany
  • Walking with Wordsworth, England
  • Driving the Uyuni Salt Flat, Bolivia.

The other is the complete guide to all 878 Unesco World Heritage sites. There are some fascinating places in this guide, but I find that their standards for what they include are too varied. For example, the Pyramids of Egypt and the Galapagos Islands are in the book, and these types of things should be. But then they also have the entire Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks listed, and the historic district of Quebec City. While these are great places to visit, I question the parameters they are using for inclusion on the list. Still, it's a great book with many ideas of fantastic places to go.

  1. The Galapagos Islands are the most incredible living museum of evolutionary changes, with a huge variety of exotic species (birds, land and sea animals, plants) and landscapes not seen anywhere else.
