Jumping Deer

Well sorry the blog is late today.  Kevin drove me up to Perth yesterday to meet up with my dad to go to his place again, and he thought I was going to do the blog and I thought he was.  So now I am doing the blog.

When we were driving yesterday to meet my father in Perth, we saw some wildlife.  Part way along I saw a deer off in the wooded area, it looked like a fairly big one but I couldn't tell if it was male or female, I couldn't see if it had antlers.  I said to Kevin that I don't understand why out of all the deer we see they always seem to be female or young male.  Rarely do we see one that has a set of antlers.

Further along on the drive, somewhere between Kingston and Westport I shouted out to Kevin that I saw an owl perched on a wire along the road.  He didn't see it, and not quite sure if he believed me or not when I said it was an owl and a fairly large one.  He turned the car around and headed back to the spot I saw it and sure enough it was still there, he turned the car around again and slowly drove closer.  I had the camera ready and was just handing it to Kevin so he could take a better picture from his side and it flew off without us getting that picture.  I am not positive but I think it was a snowy owl.   It was fairly large and was white in color but I am not great with bird identification.

Just after passing through the town of Westport and heading up a steep hill, three deer decided that now was a good time to run across the road right in front of us.  I tried to be quick with the camera, but only caught the tail end (literally) of the deer as they headed off.

Look closely on the left just above the car dashboard

The rest of our drive was uneventful.  WOW seems like we have been seeing our share of wildlife recently!

Note:  On further research, I now think the owl was a great grey owl that we saw.

  1. Yes, we are very cautious about deer when driving in Wisconsin. Especially at night.

I hit one once with my Winnebago, and knocked the deer into three pieces. But not before his hoof went right through my radiator! Immobilized us on the spot. We had to remove the radiator, have it re-cored (rebuilt) and brought it back and install it again with all new antifreeze. What a job! But found a nice lady with a farmyard we could park in while the radiator was being done.

Deer may be pretty, but they can cause a lot of trouble!

  2. We were lucky with those deer, as we saw them ahead of time and could tell they were going to cross the road in front of us, plus we were going slow at the time.

They can do alot of damage when you don't see them. You were lucky that that it didn't cause more damage to your Winnebago, or cause you to have a bad crash. Happy to hear that you found someone kind to help you out.
