Rookie League Baseball

Our son Alex's college team played against the Minnesota Twins Single-A rookie team today.

The team plays at Hammond park, in the Gulf Coast League. Hammond Park is where the Minnesota Twins play their spring league baseball. The facility has 4 other full size baseball diamonds where the Triple-A, Double-A, and Single-A teams also play spring games.

The Single-A rookie team is made up of 30 players and cannot have more than 12 players over the age of 20. They cannot have more than 4 players over the age of 21. But they are all players who have been drafted by major league baseball, or signed as free agents. The team is mainly comprised of players who are in their first year of professional baseball. A few of these players will go on to become major league players. Many will not.

It was a good game, and we lost 4-2. But we had it tied at 2-2 going into the 9th inning, so we did pretty well. We were lucky to get to play against these guys in an exhibition game, and it was only because Alex's head coach used to be college roommates with Joe Nathan, who is the Minnesota Twins top relief pitcher. Joe was at our game today, so the guys got to meet a top major league pitcher.

Our son Alex at the plate...

Probably the closest Alex will ever get to playing the major leagues!
