Thursday November 13…11:00pm
When we checked our email this morning, we had a note from our friends Glen and Steve. This is the couple we spent a couple of months last winter with in Mexico’s Baja. And we will spend
much of this winter with them as well. She was asking if we are close enough to meet up with them in Harlingen, Texas which is just outside of Brownsville. It was raining this morning, and we were looking forward to seeing them again, so we didn’t mind doing the extra drive.
The scenery is much more like Mexico, as are the small towns around here. Most of the population is Hispanic, so this area sort of feels like Mexico already.
Met up with them at the Walmart here in Harlingen. This is where we’ll do a big grocery shop and then spend the weekend getting everything set up for entering Mexico on Monday. We had a nice chat with them this evening, and discussed the possibilities of our plan to drive to Panama. Not written in stone yet, but we are now leaning towards staying in Mexico, with maybe a side trip into Belize and Guatemala. The insurance on Sherman for a 3 month trip to Panama would be about $1,000…plus gas is more expensive once you get out of Mexico heading south. And, it would be more rushed, and right now we are feeling like relaxing, not rushing. Will double check the cost of insurance, but that may well be the deciding factor.
Gas here is $1.71 US per gallon (0.54 CAN per litre). We will fill up before we leave, as this is slightly cheaper than Mexico.
Total nights sleeping in a motorhome…387
November Fuel $ 284.92 CAN
November Grocery $227.34 CAN
November Overnight costs $ 32.80 CAN
