Happy Anniversary, to us!

26 years ago today, Ruth and I were married. And now, even after living together full time for 2 1/2 years in a 280 square foot motorhome, we're still married. And we're still talking to each other!

Today, we will give you a little history of the start of our life together...

It was on Saturday March 5, 1983 that we met. I was 21 years old, and working full time at an auto body repair shop. The shop was very busy, and I had been putting in a lot of overtime. Not that it matters to the story, but I think I was making $2.80 an hour. Just thought I would throw that in! Anyhow, I needed a hair cut and hadn't been able to get to a hair cutting place. That particular Saturday, I finished work just after 5:00pm and had to drive all the way across Ottawa (population probably 700,000 at the time) to get home, where I was still living at my parents. Close to my parents home, there was a First Choice haircutters franchise.

By the time I got there, it was almost 5:45pm. I told the receptionist I needed a haircut, and she said it was too close to closing time...I begged her and she said she would go ask one of the girls if they would be willing to stay a bit late. Somebody volunteered to do it, and I was led to a chair.

Well I thought the girl doing my haircut was very cute. And during the small talk conversation that takes place during a haircut, I learned that she was not doing anything that night, and that her name was Ruth!

After the haircut, I zipped over to my parents place real quick, and looked up the number for the First Choice haircutting place. With my heart pounding, I dialed the number. A girl picked up the phone, and I asked for Ruth. I thought I might have a minute to compose myself, but she said "Ruth speaking". I can't remember exactly what I said, but it was something along the lines of "since you're not doing anything tonight, and either am I...maybe we should do something together?"

And she said "okay"...and the rest is history.

We ended up seeing a terrible movie that night "The Sting, part 2". Now, "The Sting" was a great movie, but "part 2"...not so much! And then we went to Ottawa's famous Golden Palace chinese food for egg rolls and won-ton soup...that, was good!

We saw each other daily for many weeks after that, and we were married only 14 months later on May 12, 1984, both at the age of 22. That sounds awfully young now, doesn't it??!!

  5. Thank you for all your Best Wishes to us. We had a nice day, didn't do anything special, we were both working but we cozied up on the couch in the evening watching a movie.

Derek...the car was sold to my sister when we had our first baby. Needed something a little more practical. She then sold it, don't think we saw it after that.

Trent and Teresa...thanks for the lovely compliment. Nice to hear from you. We were both wondering how you guys were doing. Sold that house yet? Looking forward to seeing you on the road one day.

  8. I hope you have many more adventures to keep you celebrating the years as they go by.

My wife and I read all of your posts' when you were traveling in Mexico, but quit when you became work bound. I just started reading again and I have been catching up.
