Getting ready for Mexico

Saturday was our “get ready for Mexico” day. I had bought the oil and filter a week or two ago, so right after breakfast I gave Sherman an oil change. Won’t need to do that again until we leave Mexico in early March.

Also, we have had a very minor leak coming from the master cylinder for the brakes. It’s intermittent though, and I thought maybe it just wasn’t a good seal on the lid. So I took the lid off and there was quite a bit of surface rust on it. I degreased it, and soaked the lid in “Must for Rust” to remove all the surface corrosion. This enabled the gasket to seat much better and hopefully will solve the problem.

While I was doing this minor mechanical work, Ruth and Whiskey were busy organizing the storage areas under the bed and the couch. Ruth said that Whiskey didn’t help much, she just kind of lay there.

All of this organizing needed to be done in order to fit in all of the supplies we were about to buy at the nearby Walmart.
I don’t think we have ever spent even close to $232 in one shop at Walmart. We stocked up on all of the things we know are difficult to get in Mexico. We even bought 20 litres of wine because we know from past experience that decent cheap wine is not that easy to come by in Mexico. How much did 20 litres of wine cost? $48. Things like toilet paper and paper towels are easy to come by in Mexico, but we can’t seem to find a brand or quality there that we like, so we bought a supply that we’re happy with. And the particular Planters brand mixed nuts that I like. Bought a couple of pounds of them. Anyhow, we’re pretty stocked up on supplies.

One thing we messed up on was not buying a decent portable BBQ grille. I can’t believe we spent the last month in the States and didn’t buy a BBQ. We even bought four of the little propane cannisters, but every time we saw a BBQ, we said “no, we’ll check out another store.” Hopefully we’ll be able to find one in Mexico, but I’m not counting on it.

So we went back to the campground and stored everything away. Relaxed for the rest of the day, and at dusk we took a bike ride up to the campground entrance to try and use the internet to skype our parents, but Texas State Parks internet is not good for that.

Watched “The Perfect Getaway” last night. Pretty good movie, a little bit psycho, but good entertainment.
