Puerto Escondido (day 4)

I didn’t sleep at all last night. Turns out that the dance that we had declined to go to was not very far away and the WAY too loud music ended about 2:00am. Then my sore throat and runny nose kept me awake for the rest of the night. This ranks right up there as one of the worst colds I have ever had.

But despite getting up and feeling like a zombie, I joined Ruth, Alex, Mary, Nataly, and Whiskey for a day at the beach.

There are a lot of different beach choices in this area. There’s the main Puerto Escondido beach, and the famous Playa Zicatela surfing beach. Then there are several smaller beaches in coves along a one mile stretch of the city’s coast. Then there are a couple more within a 20 minute drive south of where we are parked. Or, we could just walk the 15 minutes to the ocean from where we are parked.

We decided on Playa Carizalillo which is a smaller beach in a cove at the north end of the city. We took the collectivo from where we are parked and it cost 4 pesos (33 cents) each to go about 7 kms (4 miles). Then we had to walk about 20 minutes.

Whiskey’s paw seems to be getting better. Still, we wrapped it in cloth and put a plastic bag over it to protect it.

I didn’t go in the water, but Alex and Ruth went in and played in the big waves. Alex got a bit too much sun but it’ll turn into a tan fairly quickly.

We didn’t bring a lunch and instead treated Mary and ourselves to lunch out. I had a cheese omelette and the other three had fresh fish, rice, and a salad. It looked pretty good, except they screwed up Alex’s order and even when they brought him his correct order, they rushed it and it wasn’t cooked enough. He settled for a shrimp soup. The bill for lunch was 385 pesos ($32.00) and that included a childs meal for Nataly.

I then spread out my towel in the shade and had a nice afternoon nap.

Whiskey and Nataly...Whiskey likes to sit on the top seat in the collectivo!

Both Alex and I slept again this evening for about 3 hours. Maybe I’ll do some reading and then hit the sack again. It’s nice and quiet out there right now, so I think even the locals have had enough partying for now! Maybe I’ll feel half normal in the morning…

  4. Ron...Thank you. Kevin's throat is a little better today, but now the running nose has started. Hard to believe you can get a cold in such beautiful weather. Hopefully he will get another decent sleep tonight. Happy New Year to you as well, hope the rain clears up!

Rick and Paulette...The beach was gorgeous and the fish was fantastic. Only days away for you now!

WBY...Yes, Whiskey paw seems much better, it will take some time before the new claw grows back in though. We will keep a close watch on it. That fish dinner was only $8.35 or so. Mary thought it was still a little expensive but we got to sit at the table the whole time we were there and it was nicely shaded. Hope you won't have shovel too much more snow over the winter.

  5. What a beautiful place! and that fish dinner looked just scrumptious, almost artistic the way it was arranged on the plate.

Hope Whiskey's foot is doing better!

  6. Karen and Steve...The fish was excellent, other than Alex's which wasn't cooked through, but his shrimp soup was great he said.

Whiskey's foot seems do be doing great. She didn't seem to have any issues with it today and we haven't had it bandaged up or the plastic bag on it. She says to say hi to Duke and Dutchess
