Playa Tangolunda (Huatulco, day 3)

Alex and Ruth went for a bike ride into town this morning. Whiskey and I stayed with Sherman and played on the internet until they got back.

They came back with orange juice! We celebrated their good fortune with a couple of rum punches this afternoon! They also bought potatoes, carrots and pineapple juice, and treated themselves to an ice cream each.

While Alex and I sat outside playing another marathon session of backgammon, we saw a few different looking birds. We’re not really bird watching type of people, but if we see some interesting ones, we’ll try and take photos for you.

There’s an older German fellow travelling alone in a VW van and I invited him in for a drink after dinner. His van actually has Alberta plates on it, and he lives just north of Calgary during the summer, and comes down here just to wander around during the winter.

I think we’ll change our scenery again tomorrow. There’s a small hotel and coffee shop up near the lighthouse that has a couple of RV parking spots. We parked there two years ago, and it’s walking distance from a fantastic snorkelling spot. We only have one mask though, so we’ve been on the lookout for some better quality ones but haven’t come across anything yet. Heinz, the German guy, says he has one we can borrow if we like.

  2. We had one of those woodpeckers out on the tree here in frozen Wisconsin yesterday too... multi-temp birds, that is for sure!

Maybe the one here was just too stupid to fly south???

  3. Sam and Donna...The woodpecker is actually a Campephilus (or Ivory-billed) woodpecker which is part of the Imperial woodpecker family from what I have read about it. They are large and similar to the Pileated woodpecker but this one has an entire redhead whereas Pileasted only the tuff is red and it has a black beak.

Karen and Steve...I think the ones your have seen are also the Pileated woodpeckers. I have seen them up in Canada as well but this was definitely not one of them. Mind you I'm not sure why they don't all fly south to warmer weather seeing they have wings!

    Rick and Paulette...Thanks!

  4. Sorry that is not an Ivory-billed Woodpecker, it is a Pale-billed Woodpecker. Ivory-billed are either fictitious or extinct.
