Playa Zicatela (day 5)

It’s our last day here at Playa Zicatela, and Alex and I wanted to spend it on the beach. So we got walked down there fairly early (around 10:00am) and paid the 100 pesos ($8.33) for the nice lounge chairs and umbrella.

Personally, I never get tired of watching things going on at the ocean. I can sit there for hours, just looking around. The waves crashing in, people playing in the water, watching for whales or dolphins…I even have a hard time trying to get any reading done because I’m constantly looking up and seeing what’s going on.

Around noon, I spotted some whales in the distance. Alex was playing in the waves, so I pointed them out to Ruth. They got closer and closer until other people started noticing them as well. Alex even noticed them while in the water. I ran back to Sherman to get the binoculars, and by the time I got back to the beach pretty much everbody had stopped what they were doing and were watching the three whales. We felt pretty lucky to have the binoculars and we had some pretty good views of them as they passed by. This beach is in a bit of a bay and I never thought the whales would have come that close.

Ruth took off after lunch to go spend some more time with Mary and her family. Alex and I stayed on the beach and played backgammon. We both got a little too much sun, but I don’t think mine is very bad. We had stayed in the shade most of the day, but we’ve learned before that the sun can still reflect back at you off the sand.

Had another little nap around dinner time. My throat is still a little sore when I swallow -but otherwise I felt not bad today. A cold does tend to last 7 to 10 days, and this one is just running it’s course I guess!

We’re hoping to move on tomorrow to Huatulco, and the only thing that might stop us is getting out from where we are parked! There are quite a few other parked cars around but hopefully things will be pretty clear around 8:00am when we want to leave.
