Return to Puerto Escondido

We pulled out of our spot at Playa Zipolite at 7:15am. We wanted to make it throught the tight streets of Mazunte before there was any traffic, and we did okay. Still, the first 8 kms (5 miles) or so was pretty slow going.

It was only a 65 km (40 mile) drive to our spot in Barra de Colotopec just outside of Puerto Escondido, but it took us an hour and forty minutes.

About 20 kms (13 miles) outside of Puerto Escondido, they started building a new section of the highway in order to make it two lanes in each direction. They were working on this two years ago when we were here, and although most of it is now paved, it’s still not open, and there doesn’t seem to be very much work being done to get it open.

Chicken and babies outside our front door

So we are parked up at our Mexican friends Mary and Alfredo and Natalia. Ruth did some reading in the morning while I had some internet time, and then we took Whiskey for a walk to the beach. We’re about a 20 minute walk from the coast, but the beach at this location is largely undeveloped because it wouldn’t be very good for swimming.

Lots of greenery beside the river in Barra de Colotepec

The undeveloped beach here goes as far as the eye can see

in both directions!
