Puerto Escondido (day 7)

We like Puerto Escondido. It’s one of those places that we can’t seem to leave. We really should be heading back up the coast by now, but we’re still here. The first time we came to Puerto in March of 2009 it was supposed to be an overnight stop and we ended up staying for ten days.

This time, we were planning on leaving last Tuesday. Then it was Wednesday. Then it was today. Now, we’re leaving tomorrow. I guess we’ll see!

One of the reasons we like Puerto Escondido is that we seem to meet the nicest people here. A good example of that was today.

A couple of days ago, I had received an email from blog followers Tracy and Jim, and we made arrangements to get together today. They have a Honda CRV and came over to pick us up around 2:00pm this afternoon. We introduced them to Mary and the family that we are staying with and we all sat out and chatted for an hour.

Then, they brought us and Whiskey over to their apartment and generously allowed us to use their facilities (hot shower, washer and dryer, fast internet, long distance telephone) as we needed. And we needed! Almost felt like we were in civilization again!  Oh, and they have a dog named Pup-pup. Whiskey has a new friend too!

Tracy and Jim are Americans and they live in Puerto Escondido. Their very nice two bedroom apartment is among the more expensive accomodation here, they pay 5500 pesos ($458) a month for rent. There are six apartment units here, and they have access to a shared swimming pool in the courtyard, and a shared rooftop veranda for BBQ’s or entertaining. They’re on the top floor, so their balcony has a bit of a view. It was interesting to see the apartment as an example of what’s available, because we will eventually leave Canada for good. We don’t think we can afford to live there anymore, it is simply too expensive.

Afterwards, they took us out for dinner. They knew from reading the blog that we don’t go out very often, so this was a real treat. We went to a fancy spot owned by a young couple who only opened their restaurant recently. They even have a website at http://www.lafuentedelgourmet.com/ but of course it is Spanish only.

We had steak, and mine was melt in your mouth tender. Ruth says she really enjoyed her meal as well. Tracy and Jim have been there before, and once again they weren’t disappointed.

Then, we headed back to the apartment where we had a few too many drinks and proceeded to sleep in their spare bedroom. I was trying to remember the last time we didn’t sleep in the motorhome. Probably last fall sometime.

Anyhow, we really enjoyed our time with Tracy and Jim, and now we have yet another reason to come back to Puerto Escondido!

  1. Maybe you should postpone a few more days. No hurry to head north with the weather as bad as it has been!

  3. What a great day with your new friends, Isn't it great to meet such good people and have such an ejoyable time. When are you planning on being back in Ontario, do they have a limit on how long you can stay out of Canada? Be safe out there. Sam & Donna.

  5. Wow, sounds like you met up with some very special people. Don't and I repeat don't head North for at least a week, even Puerto Vallarta is coolish. Acapulco is OK but where you are is better.

  6. Those apartments are so cheap down there for sure. I agree with your comment about living in canada being expensive. Everything seems to keep going up too!

You are definitely on the right track in looking at living down there more permanently.

    Very nice apartment for sure!

    Cheers!

  7. Karen and Al...Yeah, we have been following the weather and aren't looking forward to heading back, but we are doing it slowly. We still have places to visit and people to see. We need to be in Nova Scotia for the end of March for our Grandson's first appearance into this world.

heyduke50...We are very lucky to meet such great people.

Sam and Donna...It is fantastic meeting up with new people, especially such wonderful ones. For Ontario residents it is suppose to be 6 months, after that you will lose you health care until you are back in the province for 3 months. This is difficult for them to monitor though and not sure if the other provinces are the same. Not sure when we will be back in Ontario because we are going to Nova Scotia first.

Kelly and Mojo...We can't wait to meet up with you. Yes, we were lucky that we took Whiskey, but it was also too hot to leave her in the motorhome. I even took her supper with us but not her breakfast. She enjoyed being with her new friend Pup-pup.

Contessa...We are slowly starting to head back, but as I said slowly. We won't be in Acapulco until sometime next week. We need to be in Nova Scotia by the end of March.

WBY...We thought is was a nice apartment as well. For us it is definitely a great price to be able to spend the winter down south. Kevin keeps saying that one day we will come down and never go back.

  10. Looks like a wonderful area to be in. Spent the morning with Steveio next to me, paging back in your blogs all about the areas you are enjoying in Mexico... showing him that it's not all the bad news you hear about drug loads and violence. So nice to show him how RVing in Mexico can be enjoyable ... and cheap!

(we are good boondockers too with solar and frugal living)

  11. Michael...We thought it was a great price too. No it didn't come furnished. They had the majority of the furniture made for them by a local man and he did a fantastic job.

George and Suzie...You sure have that right.

Karen and Steve...It is a fantastic area. This is our second or third time being in Puerto Escondido if you count our time at Christmas as well and we have seen new things each time. There is still more to see but we will leave that for next year. It is unfortunate how the media portrays Mexico as such a violent place. Kevin likes to put it this way, if you aren't into drugs, drug gangs, police, or military than the chances of being in the cross fire are like winning the grand prize in a lottery. We haven't seen any violence and have felt very safe. We use common sense when travelling just like we do everywhere else.
