Vinton, Louisiana

Our record of no precipitation has ended! We heard raindrops on Sherman’s roof last night for the first time since November 13th! That was a pretty darn good run of beautiful weather we had. But it’s over now. It was drizzling when we got up this morning, and it rained on and off all day.

We left Spring Creek Park in Tomball, TX at about 7:00am and headed up and around the outskirts of Houston. There was still a fair bit of traffic, but nothing that actually slowed us down. After about 25 miles, we found a Walmart to park in, and used a nearby hotel’s unsecured wi-fi to get on the internet.

Not a great day, from a weather point of view.

We think we’re going to hold off on buying a cellular internet stick for the time being. We’re only in the U.S. for another two weeks or so and we’re pretty good at finding unsecured wi-fi while we’re travelling. Bell Canada has a decent deal on one that has U.S. roaming for a small added fee, so maybe we’ll go that route when we end up in Nova Scotia at the end of the month.

Going for a stroll at the Louisiana welcome center

We got on the I-10 freeway for about 25 miles, and quickly reminded ourselves why we do not like driving on the most of the Interstate highways. Far too many trucks and traffic and noise and it seems like all you get to see is the road. We stopped at the Louisiana welcome center and decided to stick to the backroads. It may take us an extra hour to drive the same daily distance, but at least we get to see some of the countryside. We saw more RV’s during that 25 miles of Interstate highway than we saw during 3 ½ months in Mexico! And we saw at least five “RV Parks” along that noisy section of highway as well. We wouldn’t stay in them for free! We are obviously not your typical RV’ers.

We were actually heading for the Isle of Capri casino in Lake Charles, but we saw the turn off for the Delta Downs racetrack and casino near Vinton. We had been there 3 years ago and it’s about 3 miles off the I-10 so there’s no highway noise. So we headed there for the night.

Parked up for the night at the Delta Downs Racetrack and Casino

We went in and signed up for the players club and got two free t-shirts. Sat at a couple of different penny slot machines where I proceeded to lose about $15 while Ruth earned about $19. So we came away $4 to the good, plus getting free overnight RV parking, a couple of free t-shirts, a couple of free drinks, and excellent free wi-fi that reaches the parking area. Do I like the word “free”? Yup.

Today's drive. 149 miles (239 kms)

  1. Those Casino's can be good deals, even if you are like us , most give you a few bucks to play wit, and some even give half off on the buffet's which are usually great. plus the spot to park. They are definitely in our future trips.Be safe out there. Sam & Donna....

  4. Sam and Donna...We have stayed at casinos quite a few times and has always worked to our benefit. For the most part they have all been quiet too.

George and Suzie...No problem, hope you enjoy it. Remember to go to the guest services (B-Connected) to sign up for the members club. It doesn't cost anything and they should give you something.

Kenny and Angela...Thanks, we like it too, especially when we get things free!
