Franey Trail

This is a 7.4 km hike that takes you above the village of Ingonish and overlooks the Clyburn Valley. It's a pretty steep hike to get up there, and then a gradual decline around the other side. We rate this trail a 7.0 out of 10.

However we deducted half a point because of poor trail markings. There were no signs for the lookouts along the way, and no marking for the trail extension at the end to take you to the third lookout. We ended up missing it, and by the time we realized it we weren't about to turn back.

A babbling brook along the trail

Nice view from the first lookoff

We did this trail in a clockwise direction. The first half heading up the mountain is a rough trail, and steep in places. The second half coming back down is actually an old road that has become overgrown and is now accessible by ATV.

  1. Surprised to see you still wearing coats with hoods - we've been having beautiful weather here in Ottawa - sunny and 25-30C.

  2. I totally agree with the poor trail signs... when I was there last spring, the only indication of the lookout was a warning sign of a nearby cliff. Luckily, my curiosity led me to the great view.

You'll have to go back one day for a view of the valley. It is spectacular!

  3. Elaine...It was a bit chilly, but the main reason for the hoods was to stop the mosquitoes from getting at our heads.

Mike...Had we known that the second lookout was the second lookout (no signage for the first one), we would have looked for the extension to the other lookout. We are sorry we missed that lookout as I think it would have been the best.
