Well, we spent an hour at the vets. They gave her fluids because she was dehydrated and some medication to settle her stomach. We also have taken home fluid replacement and have to administer them ourselves for the next three days.
And, another stomach medication pill that has to be given daily for the next 5 days.
She seems a little better, and has drank quite a bit of water this morning. We're supposed to try and give her small amounts of cooked white rice and ground chicken, but not her dried kibble until we see some improvement.
I'm feeling a little more encouraged, but trying not to get overly optimistic because she had shown some improvement on Monday and then went downhill from there.
As I expected, we didn't get any real response as to whether or not the current problems was caused by the rabies vaccine. She simply said that older dogs can react differently. At my urging they will contact the vaccine manufacturer to report her symptoms etcetera and request compensation for treatment costs. The vet says there's a 50/50 chance they'll come through. Kind of wish this would have happened without me having to request it, but this vet doesn't seem overly proactive.
Thanks for all your kind thoughts...they mean a lot to us!
I'm so sorry about Whiskey. Just catching up here and saw that she wasn't doing well, so glad to hear there is a bit of improvement. It's so hard with older dogs, I know. Hugs to all of you.

so sorry to hear that Whiskey is not feeling well...our buddies are everything to us...hope she feels better soon!
ReplyDeleteJust tuned in, poor baby! Whiskey is working so hard at getting better. You are already doing all you can for her, love and time is all that will make the difference now. Sending lots of loving thoughts to the three of you.
ReplyDeleteWhiskey will be fine. She has all the love and support and she'll draw on that. Her symptoms sound a lot like a problem we had years ago with our shepherd Heidi. I was at the point of using a turkey baster to get chicken broth into her. Dehydrated and lost appetite. Vet finally figured out she was allergic to fleas and when you have 2 acres its impossible to make sure you are flea-free. Possibly Whiskey was allergic to the vaccine.
ReplyDeleteDonna.
Thany you again, mermaid gallery, Contessa and Sam and Donna. Your words mean a lot to us and Whiskey is happy to have all that support backing her. She is much improved, but is still not drinking the amount of water that she should be. We will keep monitoring that.
