Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas

We did a fair bit of driving yesterday, and it was all on the backroads. Plus, we didn't start off until later in the morning so we didn't arrive at our destination until after 4:00pm.

The GPS did send us on a little mystery tour. Actually, we knew where we were but it was on a narrow dirt road for about 2 miles, and it cut a lot of time off the other possible route. But otherwise, it was a nice drive through scenic countryside.

Arkansas scenery

A little slow going at times, but Sherman was up for the challenge!

Slow, but the road surface was in good condition

Anyone want to buy some rocks?

So we pulled in to Hot Springs National Park, just a little west of the city of Little Rock. The campground has just been redone and you can see they spent a lot of money on it very recently. Our only complaint is that the sites are a little too close together for our liking, but otherwise it's a very nice campground. And, the unserviced sites are only $10, with no day use fee. The electric/water sites are $24. We think this is the way the pricing should be.

Sherman, parked up for $10 a night.

The original plan was to meet our friends Chris and Juan in San Antonio for Tuesday, but things changed on their end so now we don't have that timeline to meet. That gives us an extra couple of days because our only deadline now is to cross into Mexico by this coming Friday. We still have about 690 miles (1,100 kms) to go, but some of that will be done on the Interstate. So we've decided to stay here tonight as well, and do some exploring of the park today.

That is, if the rain lets up! Pouring rain so far this morning!

Looking out Sherman's window this morning!

Yesterday's drive, 165 miles (264 kms)

  1. That sign is very scary so I'm glad the road wasn't too bad. Nice campground for $10 a night. Those are the kinds of places we like to find.

  2. I agree about the price, you don't need full electric and water each night, and it saves you a ton of money.Looks like you guys are plugging away in a southerly direction. weather is supposed to improve Monday. Your going to miss my Spaghetti & Meatballs tonight. Miss you guys. Sam & Donna....

  3. You have really gone a long distance in what seems like a short time. I'm sure it doesn't seem quite that short to you though :)

    Mexico Friday....wow!

  4. Our GPS does the same thing. Lauree almost always has a map out to verify what the thing is saying.
You are really putting some miles on.

  10. Jim and Sandie...No the road was actually pretty good. Kevin went into low gear and we just took it slow, not sure the cars behind were happy about that but oh well!

Sam and Donna...We sure hope the weather improves today. We thought the thunderstorm last night wasn't going to end. We are now waterlogged. Dinner sounded good, to bad we missed it.

Karen and Al...Yes, for us it is a short time to travel that distance but at least they aren't long days of driving like the first few days of this trip.

Kenny and Angela...Hopefully we will all have better weather today.

Mark and Lauree...We actually drove on by the road when we saw that it was a dirt road, but checking the route further we figured that we weren't going to be on it for long and the alternative was going to add on quite a few miles so we turned around and took it.

Donna...Enjoyed our walk around Hot Springs but the spa treatments were out of our price range. Loved the restoration of the old bathhouses though.

Jim and Dee...Our pace can slow down a little, although we can't spend more than one night in any one spot from this point on. Got to keep on the move.

Janie and John...We love the $10 a night price, the sites are too close together for us and it is near the road but at night it is very quiet. There are lots of hiking trails, too bad we don't have more time to explore them.

Karen and Steve...We are looking forward to crossing into Mexico as well but we are enjoying the sights as we make our way there.

Sue and Doug...Hopefully we will be in Mexico by the end of the week. We had another huge thunderstorm and buckets of rain last night too, lets hope that is the end of it.

FULL-TIMERS...OCT. 17, 2009...We wanted to do the bike trail in Little Rock that you did, but our path took us to Hot Springs instead and the weather wasn't very good for a bike ride anyhow. I guess that will have to wait for another time.
