Lake Limestone, near Groesbeck, Texas

We got an early start yesterday. We're trying to get back into the habit of leaving early and arriving early! We took all Texas backroads and arrived at our destination around 2:00pm.

For those who don't know, this part of Texas has been experiencing a major drought. Temperatures above 100F (38C) and no rain for months. And you can sure tell by the water levels in the lakes.

Stumps sticking out of the low water level.

These people thought they bought property on a lake! Look how low the water is from their docks. I guess it's 6 to 8 feet lower than it should be.

We found a county park and boat launch area at Lake Limestone. There are covered picnic tables, and a lot of area to park overnight but it's not very level. We stayed because we're the only ones here and it's nice and quiet. Oh, and it's free.

Sherman, parked up at Lake Limestone

It was a hot day and we just relaxed for the afternoon.

Another hot day today, so we'll try and get some driving done early. Have to find some new front tires for Sherman. We only bought these two years ago and the sidewalls are already showing signs of deterioration. Plus, they are wearing badly on the inside and so Sherman will need an alignment as well. I guess we'll try and find a place in San Antonio this afternoon that can do the work.

Yesterday's drive 178 miles (294 kms)

  1. Wow. The ground sure looks parched there!
Our front end was out of alignment when we first bought our motorhome. Couldn't get it sorted out until after a trip out east, and by then the tires had been somewhat scuffed. Otherwise they were in good shape, so they were moved to the inside duals when we had everything aligned and balanced. It was money well spent. I just wish I could have sorted out the Ford F53 harsh ride in the front end is all.
    Oh well. Maybe next time.
I think I like that "no shirt" program.

  2. Texas is really suffering. Sure wish they would get some rain - nice gentle long lasting rain. My kind of place - free and no people around.

  3. Nice overnight spot again and the price is right as well. Good luck with new tires and alignment.

  4. Looks like your spot was hit hard by the drought, New tires should fix that slow leaker on the right front. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna...

  8. Bob...The ground is pretty dry although they had a good rainfall the day before we arrived here and just in front of Sherman was a pile of mud. Unfortunately the rain they had was not enough and it came down too hard and too fast. They really need a nice steady rain. Kevin thought about switching the tires around like that, we have done it before but the wear on the tires was not good and the side walls were showing signs of deterioration so he wanted to be sure to have new tires for the bumpy Mexican roads.

Jim and Sandie...They sure do. We like these kinds of places.

George and Suzie...Ontario could learn a thing or two about sites like this. As for the tires and alignment, it was a long day!

Sam and Donna...It will certainly fix that slow leak. Sherman will be a happy camper when we are through.

Contessa...There will be a lot more basking in the sun. It wasn't an ideal site, but with no one around it was great.

FULL-TIMERS...OCT. 17, 2009...This one was pretty rustic and very unlevel but it was nice and quiet and the view was fantastic. They actually have 4 areas on the lake so there might be better ones. The first area we looked at seemed more level but was too close to the road for our liking.
