September expenses

Well that was a costly way to end our fourth full year living in a motorhome! September was an expensive month, partly due to gasoline, but we also stocked up in the food department for an extended stay in Mexico, and we did some costly maintenance to Sherman. We spent $4,677 for the month, our most expensive single month in the last four years.

We spent $1,065 on gasoline to get from Ottawa, Ontario to near Guadalajara, Mexico. That's not too bad, and now that we are here we only pay $0.74 a litre ($2.80 a gallon) so the next few months will have very low gasoline costs.

We also spent $72 on Mexico toll highways.

We did not have to put any propane in for the month, and we are probably okay for the month of October as well. We will need some in November, but propane (really a butane mixture down here) is very cheap here as well.

Spent $213 on alcohol, but we stocked up on 20 litres of wine while we were in Texas. Wine is typically a little cheaper in Texas than it is in Mexico.

Spent $653 on groceries, but again this was partly to stock up on some gluten free items for Ruth. And a few other items that are hard to find in Mexico.

Miscellaneous was $645. Mostly due to $400 worth of costs for indoor storage for our little car. Actually a very good deal, but I expensed it all in one month rather than averaging it over the next 24 months.

Spent $110 on entertainment. We seem to be able to stick close to the $100 mark on this every month, and this includes meals out.

And campground and overnight expenses for the month of September were $111. Not bad.

But the biggie was the $1,337 we spent on Sherman for new tires, and front end and alignment stuff. Oh well, now it's done. Also, $541 for insurance for Mexico.

But you watch and see how little we can live on and still have a great time in Mexico. Our goal is a maximum of $1,000 a month!

  3. Wow, that was a lot for you guys! I'm always amazed how cheaply you live...and impressed! I'm sure things will slow down now that you're back in Mexico.

  4. Not a bad month for expenses considering the the supplies you stocked up on, maintenance for Sherman and fuel for the long journey south in a short time. Now there, your fuel consumption, camping and almost everything else will be very little, enjoy and be safe.

  6. Luci and Loree...We love it here!

Mark and Lauree...Yes, we live in the motorhome fulltime. Canada is a great place to visit depending on the time of year. We were out east this spring and it was very cold and wet, right up to the end of June. This was a little unusal though. Also be prepared it is expensive!!!...At least to us, it is.

Karen and Al...That was a lot for us, hopefully we won't see a month like that again. I think the next few months will be pretty darn cheap.

George and Suzie...We knew it was going to be expensive but even so, it was still more than we expected. Yep, things will be much better now.

FULL-TIMERS...OCT. 17, 2009...Yes, staying in one spot will sure make a difference. Also when we do move on it will be at the nice slow pace that we like.
