Starting our fifth year on the road

Other than one four month stint housesitting, yesterday marked four full years living in a motorhome. It was October 5, 2007 that our house sale closed and we moved into Sherman.

But our fifth year may be a little different. Now that Whiskey is gone, we want to start exploring outside of North  America. We have a lot of options now, including motorhome exchanges, backpacking, hostels, couchsurfing, and house sitting. We want to do long term trips to South America, Australia, Europe, and Asia over the next few years. We also want to hike Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa at some point in the next couple of years.

Yesterday was Barb's birthday and she asked if we wanted to join her and Sal for lunch in Mazamitla. The town is about 10 kms away from here and is a popular tourist spot for people from Gaudalajara. There are a lot of rental cabins and weekend homes there and it's a pretty place.

Sal, Barb, Kevin, Ruth out for lunch

The restaurant is a little bit upscale, but still has reasonable prices. Ruth and I shared a plate of their house special fajitas made with chicken, beef, and shrimp. It was great and we almost couldn't finish it between us. I had a beer and Ruth had a glass of Sangria. The bill including tip was 220 pesos ($17.16) for the two of us.

The walls of this restaurant are covered with pictures of different spots from around the world.

Then Sal took us for a tour around an expensive area of town where there are some nice homes.

Check out the fake plastic deer on the balcony.

  4. Nice milestone. Congratulations.

The thought of "tacky" sort of popped into my head when I saw that first house, and then you mentioned the fake deer.
Yup, I think I'll go with "tacky". It's been confirmed.
It COULD be a really nice looking place, but I think it's just all the fancy wrought iron fencing that somehow doesn't work for me. We used to see some sights in Puerto Rico too.
    Man, they like their fences!

  6. Congratulations on your 5th year anniversary and condolences on the loss of Whiskey.

It’s amazing how similar this post sounds to what we’re doing. We’ve been RVing fulltime for about 18 months and chose this mode of travel because we had two cats when we started planning our trip. They’ve since left us, far too early. But now we’re planning on parking the RV and doing some more international travel. We already book flights to Central America this winter where we’re going to backpack around the northern parts for two months. If all goes well, we’ll be doing more of this kind of thing.

    Happy travels,
    Brian

  7. So sorry to read about Whiskey's passing. Our Rusty is still getting cancer-killing shots, and we are all hoping for the best. The Vet doesn't want to surgically remove it because he is afraid he won't be able to get it all, then it will just keep returning. He knocked him out yesterday and put a much stronger shot in the area. It already looks like it is doing it's job.As for me, I hadn't thought about gluten allergies, and none of the Doctors have brought it up. Stay safe and thanks for your very sweet comment.

Janie and John...It is fun to look ahead and plan but we are really enjoying the NOW too!

Brian...It is actually only our 4th anniversary, we are just starting our 5th year. Thank you for your kind words about Whiskey, she is definitely missed, sorry to hear about the loss of your cats. We will have to watch your trip though Central America this winter, you will be able to give us some pointers. We may venture into Guatamala ourselves this winter.

Pidge...Thank you Pidge. I hope that Rusty's treatment will work, he is such a lively little guy. Hope you are able to find out what is causing your problems so that you are able to continue with your journey.

Mark and Lauree...Thank you. We are looking forward to all our adventures ahead.

Contessa...This is why we decided to start earlier than most. We hope then that there will be lots of time. Thanks!

Donna...We can't wait to start some of those adventures, but we are enjoying the ones we have right now, here in Mexico. We are missing Whiskey here though, many times we are looking around for her and her happy smile and wagging tail.

Chris...Yep, we loved the food there. I think I can see us heading back there for another meal one day soon. Hope we get to see you in December.

Elaine...Thanks Elaine. Sorry about the delay in your adventures this winter. That really sucks for you two. Hope Rick can get the surgery sooner than later.

    Happytrails...Thank you!
