Zacatecas

Thanks you all so much for the outpouring of support. We are a little overwhelmed by your comments and thoughts, many from friends we have not yet met. We're so glad that some of you were able to share Whiskey's company over her last few weeks with us.

It will be a long time before we own a pet again. We want to do some traveling abroad, and that is difficult to do when you are a pet owner. But we will take the time to enjoy every dog we meet along the way, and maybe we'll even do some house sitting where we get to look after someone else's pet for a while.

But for the time being, our plans won't change. We are still going to tour Mexico (and maybe even further south) this winter, but who knows what we'll do next year. Obviously we are distressed about Whiskey's passing, but it opens up a lot of opportunities for us, so we look to the future.

On Thursday morning, we left Potrero Chico. We didn't have a long driving day because Chris had pointed us to a location near the village of Los Lirios where a rancher with an apple orchard had let them stay at one point. We took the toll roads and the highways that avoided most of the congestion around Monterrey and Saltillo. But there is a lot of new road construction and many of the interchanges didn't show up on either of our GPS devices. We took one wrong turn that almost had us headed towards Torreon, but otherwise made it to the apple orchard without incident.

The toll roads are expensive, but are in excellent condition.

Parked up overlooking an apple orchard near Los Lirios. This is where we were when Whiskey passed away.

Thursday drive, 135 kms (84 miles)

Yesterday morning, we left early. We had a long driving day, but the highway to Zacatecas from Saltillo is brand new in the southbound direction so it was an easy drive. Arrived at our couchsurfing friend Alejandra's house at around 4:00pm, and spent the evening talking with her and her mother.

Friday drive 420 kms (260 miles)

Today we are going to make an effort to get all the way to Hacienda Contreras. We wouldn't normally do this much distance so quickly but Barb and Sal have graciously offered a burial spot for Whiskey and we think it's a perfect resting place so we can't waste any time. If we don't get there today, we will certainly be there tomorrow, and that's okay too.

  6. What a wonderful place for Whiskey to rest. I hope you plant a tree or flowering bush as a marker. Its hard to leave a beloved pet in Mexico but nice to come back and visit over the years to come.

I agree with your future travel plans. Now is the time to do so.

  7. It's Donna. I tried twice fri to post from work and didnt take. I was so sad to hear about Whiskey, but grateful that I had a chance to meet such a gentle soul. It was so obvious in her eyes how much she loved you both and that was becuase of love and care you gave her. Have lost many furkids and it is never easy, they live in your heart and soul forever. My consolation has always been they are no longer in pain and are now running free and happy til they see us again.
