Tepic (day 2)

First thing yesterday we had to find a laundry. The lady here said there's one two blocks away, so we walked over there first and made sure they were open and could do it before we lugged our clothes all that way.

Sure enough, she said she could do it and have it ready for 2:00pm. It's very rare to find a do-it-yourself laundromat in Mexico. The majority are where you drop your clothes off and they weigh them, wash them, dry them and fold them. The price at this particular place was 11 pesos ($0.86) per kilogram. Our bundle of clothes weighed 8 kgs, so our total cost was 88 pesos ($6.87).  For this price, we love having somebody else do the laundry!

Then we walked to the historic central area. Along the way, we wandered around in at a big city park called "La Loma". They even have a free zoo there, so we talked to the parrots and watched the monkeys play.

Talking to the birds.

Walking through La Loma park in Tepic.

We made our way to the old central area. Walked about 4 kms from the campground to get here. Tepic is a fairly modern city, seems everybody has cell phones. Lots of cars around and people about. A busy place. Very heavy traffic in the central area...would NOT like to drive there. We walked into the cathedral...very ornate, but not special enough for a photo. I liked the exterior towers though.

This guy was carrying all of this stuff!

We sat in the central square and bought an ice cream. I love just sitting in the plaza and watching the people. Then we walked back to the laundry place. We could have taken the bus or a taxi because they are both so inexpensive, but we liked the exercise and you see so much more walking. Made it to the laundry place just before two o'clock and the lady was just taking our things out to fold them. We kind of felt we made her rush a little bit so we gave her 100 pesos ($7.80) and she looked happy to receive a tip. It is not normal to tip for laundry service.

Today we will relax, although I have a small repair to do to Sherman's roof as we got a little close to a tree branch. It's fairly minor, but still needs to be fixed. Also have to figure out where the bus station is as we are taking the bus to Mazatlan early Saturday morning.

  3. I agree with Angela, a box of Tide is 12 bucks around here.plus carrying the stuff up and down stairs and waiting for it and then folding it yourself. It just seems worth it to have it done for that price. The churches down there are sure huge for a small town.Don't know if you saw out little stone Catholic church in Dardenne Prairie, it's beautiful, but small, since it was German Parish they were tighter with a buck and built it all themselves. All the stone & woodwork is original. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna.

  4. On Stone Island the was a lady who picked up the laundry and returned it usually two days later, very reasonable and with any luck you got all your own clothes back.

Always loved el centro in the Mexican cities and towns always an interesting place to people watch.

Good you got the roof repair done even minor can become major if left unattended.

  9. $6.87...that is crazy. I just did laundry, and it cost us $10.50. I have to wash, dry, fold and put away and used my own detergent.
    What a lovely town!

  10. Okay, you beat us by 1 peso a kilo. You are right though, what pleasure to have someone else do your laundry. Helps the local economy too!

    Mexico is for rvers!
