Puerto Escondido (day 2)

We sat on the beach most of the morning. Mary and Nataly were coming over at some point, and just before lunch they showed up and went into town with us.

There's a bus to town that leaves right from the corner nearest us and it costs 5 pesos (40 cents) each. Nataly and Cameron are free, so it would have cost 20 pesos for us all. But a taxi is only 25 pesos ($2.00) so we hopped in a taxi. They are everywhere.

We went to the bank, and then to a local dentist. Lindsey needs a crown on a root canal she had done. Her insurance paid for the root canal, but wouldn't pay for the necessary crown. How stupid is that??!! Anyhow, they wanted $900 to do the crown in Canada and it will probably cost about $150 down here. We made an appointment for 1:00pm today. Then, we went and did some grocery shopping.

On our way back, we wanted to pick up a "pollo asado" (roast chicken). You can usually pick up a whole chicken with salsa and tortillas for around 65 pesos ($5.20). We got all our groceries into the taxi and asked the driver if we could pay a little extra to stop for a chicken. Do you think we could find one??!! We must have gone to four or five different places looking for a roast chicken. Usually, they are a dime a dozen. Finally found one place that had them roasting but they wouldn't be ready for 20 minutes. We gave up and went home and made sandwiches.

Not a bad spot to waste away a morning.

We spent most of the afternoon sitting under the restaurant palapa owned by Uncle Eugenio. We had been looking for whales in the morning, but hadn't seen a thing. This afternoon however, we heard some people yelling "ballenas! ballenas!" so we went running to see the whales.

There were two or three of them out there playing, and they put on quite a show for us!

Cameron is happy sitting on Grandma's lap, but no so happy if he walks on the sand. I think he just doesn't like the feel of it. It's not too hot because he doesn't like the sand in the shade either!

A happy beach bum!

  10. I agree with the comments. Those photos are great indeed. By the way, back to the insurance thing. Why wouldn't the insurance company pay for the crowns? I think it should be covered.

    1. No idea. Canadian insurance companies are full of disclaimers about what they'll pay for and what they won't. How else would they make money? Insurance is the biggest scam going...
