Red Rock Canyon

Yesterday we headed out to Red Rock Canyon. Once you get there, they have a 13 mile (20 km) scenic drive on a one way road. Cost is $7 per car and there are various parking areas along the way with lots of hiking trails and rock climbing.

We stopped at the visitors center and picked up a free trail guide. The area was a lot busier than we thought it would be on a Tuesday morning and we decided on a 5 mile (8 km) hike up Turtlehead Mountain that was rated "strenuous". We figured this trail would be less busy, and it ended up being just right.

The mountain we are about to climb!

Interesting rock formations.

2.5 miles (4 kms) to the top, and an elevation gain of 2,000 feet!

Uphill, every step of the way!

Made it to the top. Took us two hours, but we stopped quite a few times to rest and enjoy the views.

If you look closely you can see the car park area where we started from.

Heading back down.

Nice scenery.

We had a really good hike, so thanks to those of you who suggested we go there! Made it back to our couchsurfing hosts Mike and Carol, where Ruth made a big pot of jumbalaya for supper as a thank you to our hosts. It was delicious!

We're heading back to Mexico this afternoon. Had a great week in Vegas!

  1. Beautiful hike. With my back as it is, we may have to opt for an easier trail. That one looks so awesome though! Safe travels to Mexico. ~wheresweaver

  9. Glad you got to enjoy that area. It is still spring break time and I think that is why so many areas are busy. We have seen lots of families here at the Grand Canyon that are here on spring break.
