$5 return flight to England

I sign up for various travel newsletters, and yesterday I received one from a company that regularly has some pretty good deals. The one that stood out of course was the one that said you could get a return flight from Toronto to Birmingham, England for $5. But that sounds too good to be true, no??

Well of course it does. Because you have to pay $580 in taxes. Now, $585 tax included is still a good price, but it is certainly not $5!

And there are other advertised deals. $7 return Toronto to Orlando. Plus $283 in taxes.

However, I'm finding references online that airlines and travel agencies will be required to advertise pricing on a tax included basis beginning in December of this year. And long overdue I might say! But why does it take so long to put these things into effect?  If you're going to make the change, why not make it right now? Dunno.

Speaking of travel, time to go vote. Only two days left in the contest.

And don't forget to vote for my cousin as well. She stayed in first place overnight partly because of your extra votes!

  5. I've long ago given up on the "great deals" offered by airlines. Any of the discount lines here in Europe like "Fly Niki" have seats spaced for folks a bit smaller than me, so anything over about an hour or so would be out of the question. Only did that once when someone else booked it for me. I'd sooner do my own booking than rely on someone's secretary who has never left the office.
Once upon a time good deals could be had with sites like "Hotwire", and ever Air Austria has their, "Red Tag Mondays", but then they want you to fly on a Tuesday morning at 6:30 or some such silly time. One of us is still working, so that's not about to happen.
Good luck with the contest. Off to vote.

  7. I have argued that ALL prices quoted should include all taxes. That is how it is in Mexico. If something is priced at 200 pesos, that is how much the cashier takes from you. Not like the USA and Canada where. depending which State or Province you are in, the final price can be 15% or more higher than the price tag. Or like you say in the ticket industry, several thousand percent higher.
