A fun free thing to do on the weekend

Yesterday, we went for an 8 km (5 mile) roundtrip walk over to a remote control airplane flying park. The Arnprior Remote Control Club does their stuff there every weekend. What a fun way to spend a couple of hours!

These little airplanes have come a long way since I was young. And they're not so little either!

Fueling up for a flight

And they come in all different models. They have some that look like fancy acrobatic machines, and some that look like basic 4 seater Cessna style. And some that have rocket turbine engines that run on the same fuel that a big jetliner does. And helicopters too!

Ruth with a big yellow remote control plane.

This big plane was fun to watch.

And, coming in for a landing.

These guys get together pretty much every weekend during the summer, and some of them have been doing it for over 25 years. Kind of a neat hobby, and apparently you can get into it for around $500 for a starter kit. And then I'm sure that you can also spend a LOT more than that!

Pretty high tech looking remote control unit.

Just about any city of any size has a remote control flying club. Just google it in your area, and head out on a weekend day to watch the flying! Like I said, a fun thing to do that's free!

We didn't do much else yesterday, and not much planned for today either. But we have a couchsurfer from South Korea coming to stay with us from Tuesday to Thursday so that should be fun. It is just as interesting hosting a couchsurfer as being one in someone else's house. Glad we are able to give back to the system while we're here at Ruth's dad's.

  1. There's a remote control airplane club in Apache Junction and we often go out there. Jim would like a plane and maybe someday we'll get him one. Voted. What am I going to do when I don't have you guys to vote for?

  6. That was a fun thing to do! Isn't it amazing what they can do with those planes...and all from the ground! Makes you think how difficult it might be to fly some of those military drones from as far away as they do. Good luck in the contest...we have again voted for you, and now your cousin.
