What do we pack for a 3 to 4 month trip?

Some of you will be horrified to learn that we sometimes wear the same item of clothing two days in a row! But sorry, that's how we travel light. Even though we're only bringing a small backpack each, we're bringing along enough clothing that we'll be comfortable, and if we need something else, we'll buy it along the way.

But for now, here's what is coming with us in our Heys ePac17 Roller backpacks...

For Kevin
  • 5 pairs of underwear
  • 3 pairs of socks
  • 1 pair of shorts
  • 1 pair lightweight cargo pants
  • 4 golf shirt/t-shirts
  • 1 sweater
  • 1 swimsuit (why? not sure...)
  • 1 pair lightweight sandals
  • 1 lightweight spring jacket (not shown)

All of this fits, and with room to spare!

I was thinking about wearing a pair of jeans on the plane. But I think now that I will leave the jeans behind, and wear the cargo pants. Of course I'll also be wearing another pair of underwear and socks, and my hiking boots. I'll probably wear the jacket as well, if only to take some of the weight out of the carry on bag.

Ready to go!

Only have to slide the laptop into it's padded, lockable pocket and we're all set! Now, we'll see how Ruth makes out with her luggage. I hope she doesn't ask me to put some of her stuff in mine...because it's not happening!

We're heading for Ruth's sister's place just outside of Toronto and we'll stay there overnight tonight. So we've got a five hour car ride ahead of us.

Just heard from someone looking for a 5 week house sitting in a village a few minutes south of Oxford...I think we'll take her up on it. We'll let you know the details once we're confirmed!

  1. I've gotten a whole lot better about packing lighter in the fifth wheel but nothing like you guys. I have gotten rid of probably 2/3 of what I started out with when it comes to clothes and I definitely wear the same clothes more than one day. Especially when we're on the move.

  2. Maybe throw in a tooth brush? Then again, it is England! Look forward to your new adventure, and hearing what happened with the Aussie contest!

Kent (still don't know how to not post anonymously!)

    1. Ha! Yes, I do have a small toiletries bag...toothbrush, comb, deodorant, dental floss...hadn't packed it yet, but would not have forgot it. Thanks for the reminder though!

  4. Are you going to shave? Buy disposable razors there? Is there room for me in your bag?

    1. Are you going to shave? Yes, once a week whether I need to or not!

      Buy disposable razors there? Yep!

Is there room for me in your bag? The airline security people might have something to say about that...

  5. Not horrified in the least to read that you wear the same thing two days in a row. I make sure to hang up whatever I've worn that day, and if I can get away with it, I'll just put the same shirt back on again.
One time though in Paris, there was no way I could get a third day out of a shirt (it was hot!) and ended up breaking down and plopping down €5 for a cheap shirt at some side walk sale. I've worn it enough since to get my money's worth, but it was cheap, and didn't even fare well after a first washing. Took a chance.
One of my nephews has this idea that he'll take along nearly "spent" underwear and then just throw them away. The thing is though, if my underwear is getting close to being "spent" (i.e. the elastic is shot) it will have disappeared long before ever being considered as something to take while travelling. There are enough other "issues" to deal with, I don't want to be constantly hitching up my drawers.

  6. I always say, "Take half the clothes you think you need, and twice the money".

  7. Not horrified but just couldn't do it myself!

  8. Good packing job Kevin...I'm sure Ruth will do just as good a job...without asking to pack stuff in your bag :)....Of all the clothes we loaded onto the MH for the snowbird trip we didn't wear 1/2 of em..so I emptied it out and will start over...have a super trip!!!

  9. Hey Kevin! What if someone like us drags you to a wedding or other fancy event? You need a pair of pants and nice shirt!! Bet Ruth is taking her skirt....

    1. Yep, the skirt is packed! Kevin will be able to wear his cargo pants, if that isn't good enough then we will just have to go shopping.

  11. You two are amazing. We also pack like that. Mom taught us to wash out undies after two days. lol
I can't wait to follow your travels. Do you need a different plug for the computer? Maybe not there, but other parts of the world you do. Just making sure to say something about it.

Have a great time, safe travels.

    1. Yes Dee, we do need a plug adapter for our computers and anything electrical. We have one but need to get one more so that we each have one. Should we make it to mainland Europe it looks like we will need a different one there.

  12. I know my husband would travel that way easily but it would be a challenge for me. I have gotten much better even took several bags of clothes to Goodwill recently because I now realize I don't need that many clothes!
