Bought a new coat!

When we came on this trip across the pond, we only brought the necessities, and we figured it was summer anyhow. So I only had a light sweater and a light jacket. But it's starting to get cool here. Highs now are only around 16C (61F), and if there's a wind or we're out hiking at higher altitudes it gets chilly!

Plus of course, we're going to Iceland in less than two weeks and the high temperatures there are around 10C (50F). And I've read stories of people who were out whale watching or on some kind of boat tour in Iceland where they froze! So when I saw a deal the other day, I scooped it up!

We were in Abergavenny on Tuesday, and happened across a "discount" store. I spotted a rack of coats and the price of this one was only £10.00 ($16.50). Yes, tax included. When you see a price in the UK, that's the price you pay. Tried one on, and it fit really well, with a fleece lining and a warm hood. So I bought it. I love getting a deal!

Kevin, with his nice warm new coat. Just ignore Harvey going for a pee in the background!

We walked back over to Dore Abbey yesterday afternoon. Regular readers will remember that we were there last Friday, and we wanted to go up the old tower but we didn't have a flashlight with us. Well, we still didn't make it up there. Helen and Tony went up first, and did have a bit of a look around before a guy told them they weren't allowed. Then we tried and we went half way up and we were stopped by a guy who said he was a contractor and there's no insurance so he would be liable if we hurt ourselves. I argued with him, saying he should have a sign up at the bottom if that's the case, instead of course the sign says that you can go up at your own risk. Well of course it's at my own risk, who's risk would it be at?? Anyhow, I didn't make an issue of it, it wasn't worth it.

Afterwards, they wanted to carry on for a longer walk, so I took Harvey back to the house with me. I cut the grass, and did some more research for our Iceland trip. Turns out that Reykjavik airport is a 45 minute drive from Reykjavik and the shuttle bus from the airport costs around $15 each, each way. That's $60! There's got to be a cheaper way, and I will figure it out!

It was getting on towards 6:00pm by the time Ruth got back with the others. Here's a few photos she took along the way...

We decided that since it was getting on, we would try out the fish and chips shop in the village. It's a take away place, so Tony and I wandered down and ordered some food. They did a special piece of fish for Ruth with no batter on it, and two large orders of chips...total came to around £18 ($29). Not bad for the four of us.

It was good, but I was surprised that they didn't do their own home made tarter sauce. Instead they handed you packets of Heinz stuff.

Ruth, Tony, and Helen...and of course Harvey looking on!

  1. Hadn't really noticed what Harv was doing until you pointed it out. Good place for it.
Good deal on the coat. I have more of them than I know what to do with. I keep telling "the kids", "No more clothes!" at Christmas. They never learn.
It's decidedly cooler here in Vienna today as well. Winter approacheth.

  2. Lauree was in London early this year for 10 days. Now she says we have to go back together, because she loved it so much.

    1. You will need to see more of the country. The city is nice but the country is beautiful.

    1. They didn't serve them in newspaper so we needed something to eat them off of. :)

  4. Was wondering when you were going to have "Fish and Chips". Looks like you have the Heinz Ketchup to go along with the Heinz Tartar sauce thou. In my restaurant homemade tartar sauce was available on request.

Don't tell me Europe is starting to worry about getting sued over

    1. We aren't knocking it Donna, we would just have thought that they would have made their own.

And yes, they are getting almost as bad at wanting to sue for everything over here too, just not as bad as the USA.

  6. Kevin! You mean you didn't have supper ready when they got back? As much as Ruth cooks for you? Can you cook? Looks like the good times continue. Nice coat too. Hasta luego.

  7. Great deal on the coat. Are there Goodwills in the UK? That's where the really good deals are here in the states.

    1. They don't have a Goodwill shop as such but they do have secondhand charity shops. We will have to go looking for one to see if we can pick up some hats and mitts for ourselves.
