Two more sleeps!

Almost ready to go. Got a few more things done yesterday. Had a great day with our son Alex, played some pool and watched some playoff baseball. Not sure when we're going to see each other again because we may not make it back to the Ottawa area next spring. Good thing for video over the internet!

Bought a nice little 12 volt cooler yesterday. They sell for about $80 brand new (plus 13% tax here in Ontario) so I wouldn't have bought one if we had to pay that kind of money. But I came across a used one online so after a few email conversations I agreed to drive over to get it. She was asking $30, but it was going to cost $10 in gas to go get it! So I offered her $20 and she agreed. Thanks Nicole!

Great for a road trip in the car!

The main reason we wanted a little cooler like this? Cheese.

We love old cheddar cheese. Especially the 2 lb block of Cabot extra sharp cheese that you can't buy in Canada. And it's very difficult to find ANY cheddar cheese in Mexico. So we will be able to stock up and buy a few bricks before we cross into Mexico. But it will also be handy for keeping sandwich meat and lunch items cold while we're on the road.

Ruth made some chocolate chip cookies yesterday. Mmmm. My favorite. Our son Alex watched on so that he could learn how to make them for himself!

Then, Ruth did a roast leg of lamb. One of her father's favorite meals, so we made sure to get that done while we were here. It was delicious!

Mouth watering good!

Taken this morning, the view across the road from Ruth's dad's house. Sure is a calm morning, temperature here is 11C (52F).

  1. Dinner looks awesome!
We love our old cheddar too. We brought 5 lbs of 5 year white cheddar. 2 lbs for us and three pounds for our American friends. Such a nice treat.

    1. Old cheddar is definitely our favourite types of cheese. It has lots of flavour.

  2. Getting all the 'to do's' done!! Great idea about the cooler. We bring lots of cheese into Mexico and then we bring a lot of Mexican cheese home.

    1. Yep, there are some good Mexican cheeses as well but for a meat and cheese sandwich or grilled cheese, cheddar is the best.

  5. Those coolers are great but...make sure everytime you get out of the car you unplug it. We ran the battery dead a couple of times by forgetting to unplug when we went in to places. Safe travels and see you soon.

    1. We used to have a bigger one for many years when we had our house and went camping lots and we loved it. One of the reasons for getting this little one. Don't worry we won't forget to unplug it, thanks for the reminder Barb.

  7. I drove a truck for a living, had exactly the same cooler. I believe it is a cooltron. Used it for at least 10 years and loved it. I would pack 5 days of meals in it.

    1. Yep, it is Koolatron. We had a bigger cooler made by Coleman, I think, many years ago and when we sold everything we gave it to Kevin's sister and I believe it is still going today. I think we got it about 13 years ago, it got used a lot.

  8. Spending more time in Texas lately, I have found dozens of good buys on Craigslist. Amazing that someone pays so much for something and then once they buy it they have trouble giving it away for next to nothing. It is becoming a hobby!

    1. We love buying secondhand. It's always cheaper and no tax to boot. We have never had a problem with anything that we have bought so we won't stop any time soon.

  9. Your header photo is neat - the reflection of the bridge in the water - like that! That cooler is neat - might have to look into getting one.
