Drive to Guadalajara

Yesterday we took Sal to the Guadalajara airport. Fortunately, the airport is on the south side of the city, so we didn't really have to drive in the city itself. And we've been to the airport twice before so we were familiar with the area.

It was 140 kms (87 miles) each way but a lot of the drive is through the towns and villages around Lake Chapala so it still takes just over two hours each way.

140 kms (87 miles) each way to Guadalajara airport.

We had left around 12:00 noon and we didn't get back until just after 6:00pm, but we took advantage of the trip by stopping at the Bodega Aurrera store near the airport as well as the Walmart in Ajijic to pick up a few things that aren't as readily available in the town nearest us.

Ajijic and Chapala have a lot of expats and snowbirds from Canada and the U.S. living there, and we noticed a difference in pricing on some items at this Walmart. But there were still some deals to be had, we just had to be a little more selective.

Deals of the day? The Bodega Aurrera had grapefruits on special again. We bought four of them at 10 cents each!

Delicious sweet juicy grapefruits for 10 cents each!

And speaking of deals, Sal knows a guy in town who's selling bottles of 12 year old tequila for 100 pesos ($8.00). So we bought a bottle...we'll wait for friends Chris and Jaun to show up before we crack it open!

12 year old tequila for $8.00...anybody want a taste?

And another deal that you can take advantage of...our friends at Firmoo Optical have a customer appreciation sale on. Besides the fact that first time customers get a FREE pair of prescription glasses or sunglasses, you can also save $20 off your total order (not including shipping charges or discounted glasses) by using coupon code FIRMOOLOVESU

Just visit either of the two advertisements on this page.

    1. It's only a bargain if it is something you want or need, otherwise it's no bargain at all!

  5. I discovered, once, 32 years ago, after drinking some aged tequila, that the police in Arcata, California have some sort of fussy rule about not driving through stop signs and/or driving the wrong way on one-way streets - and they have absolutely no sense of humor about it. I was so impressed with the many and varied consequences of their uncharitable attitude that - just to show them - I haven't had a drink since I got out of jail...

    1. Sue, tequilla shots with salt and lime is a gringo thing. Mexicans sip their tequilla straight and enjoy it or they mix it with Squirt (pop/soda that is like Sprite), haven't seen a Mexican yet that has done a tequilla shot.

    Howdy Ruth & Kevin,

Just catching back up on your blog and saw you were impressed with Chilhuly's work... You do know he has a studio in Washington state that you can visit; we are just blown away by all of the beauty in his glass... Glad you are 'home' in Mexico again; I sure Sherman's happy, also!!!

    1. It won't make it on time from here, Lindsey and it probably won't make it to you in one piece. Maybe you will be lucky and we will bring you one back with us to Canada. :)
