Happy Birthday Ruth!

A week or so ago, I took apart the front brakes on the little blue car because the slide on one of the calipers was seized. Cleaned and lubricated where it was needed and put everything back together. No problem.

The last time Sherman the motorhome was driven any kind of distance was the middle of March. At the time, we had noticed a pretty bad squeal had started coming from one of the front brakes. I knew we wouldn't be driving him for a while, so I just left it knowing that we'd have to have it looked at sometime before taking him out again.

But I have lots of time on my hands, and Sal has lots of tools here. So I figured I would have a look at the motorhome brakes myself. Well of course they're a little more heavy duty that the little blue car's front brakes!

I have a repair manual, and the internet to use as a resource. I got one side jacked up yesterday and supported, and got the wheel off and had a good look at things. I think I understand the system well enough now to take the caliper off and have a better look at the pads and make sure everything is working correctly so maybe I'll do that today. Even though Sherman now has 75,000 miles (120,000 kms) on him I expect these are still the original brakes. I know that nothing has been changed in the five years we've had him, but given that most of those miles are on the highway, and we use the engine for braking on hills, the brakes have actually had very little wear. Oh, we did have a leaky rear wheel brake cylinder changed a couple of years ago.

Oh, did you know that someone is having a birthday today? Yes, I had to change the blurb on "about Kevin and Ruth" because one of us isn't 50 years old anymore!
