Acapulco (day 2)

We're not actually in Acapulco. We're about 13 kms (8 miles) northwest of the city, up the coast on a spit of land that has a lake on one side and the ocean on the other. In fact, we won't be going in to Acapulco at all.

We've "done" Acapulco before. It's a bit of a zoo for traffic, and even when we leave here this morning, we've decided to take the round about route that goes north of the city. It's a little longer, and a little more expensive, but easier on the nerves and we don't need to worry about transito police.

(A) Where we are.

Yesterday morning, we walked down to the corner, about 1.5 kms (1 mile) and dropped off a load of laundry at the lavanderia. They wash, dry, and fold your laundry. Total cost, 60 pesos ($4.80). There were sheets in the load, so we asked if we could have them back same day. Sure, but you'll have to come and get it at 8:00pm. No problem.

Then we went down a little further and bought some chicken breast and veggies so that Ruth could make a stir fry over at John's place for dinner.

I finally repaired the cord on Ruth's computer. It's been acting up for months, and we have several times been very close to bringing it in to get it fixed. Yesterday I decided to tackle the job myself. Really, just had to splice the cable near the plug that goes into the laptop, but I had to cut quite a bit of it out. Works fine now, but the cable is a lot shorter!

John has a pontoon boat moored at the lake and he asked if we wanted to go for a ride. So we picked up a six pack and hit the water.

Captain John, with Ruth enjoying some sun.

As you can see, it's quite a big lake.

But then there was a problem. John went to speed up, and the engine just sort of bogged down. Hmm. Played with things a little bit, and there was something not right and it kept getting worse. We headed back to shore. Soon, a mechanic guy showed up, and he came out on the boat with us.

Mechanic guy trying to get things smoothed out.

But he couldn't figure out the problem. Time to call in the reinforcements! So in twenty minutes or so, another mechanic showed up.

This guy worked for an hour or so.

They managed to get it running better, but it's still not perfect. managed to take the boat out for another half hour or so.

Seems to be working okay now!

Kevin and John.

Ruth, enjoying the ride.

Went over to John's 5th wheel where Ruth made us a delicious chicken stir fry. And none of it ended up on the floor!

Today, we're heading about three hours south to a little spot we know of where we will tent camp on the beach for two nights. Sounds like we're traveling with another couple, Dave and Bonnie who are from New Mexico and have a little combi van. They're also heading for Puerto Escondido and we've decided to do today's drive together.

  1. Something like that happened to us a long time ago. The mechanic thought we got some bad fuel...maybe a bit of dirt in it. Glad you got to enjoy some time on the water.

    1. The mechanic took the carburetor apart and cleanned it and then decided that there was water in the fuel tank. So they emptied the fuel tank and then put fuel back in. Seemed to work better but still not as good as it should.

  2. Hm, stole my idea. I was going to come up with bad or dirty fuel. Boats tend to sit a little bit too much.
    I suppose we'll never know.

  3. I think Dave and Bonnie were here a few days ago - no room at the inn. Have a good ride.....

    1. That was them. They stopped in there to say hi to some friends before continuing on to Acapulco. They are a very nice couple, we enjoyed our short time with them.

    1. By the time we were back in the boat the six pack was gone.

  5. All the years we were there it was call a lagoon, never a lake. There is an area where it flows into the ocean at the north end, very interesting mix of the two waters. The lagoon is beautiful with lots of little inlets, flowers and Mexicans living along the sides.

    1. Apparently, John said they now have a dam at the end and that it is strictly fresh water now. Would love to have had more time to explore it but we enjoyed the time we had on it. From the road all you see are big walls and you don't see what's behind them but from the water you get to see the homes.

  6. A six pack on the boat sounds like my kind of trip. Nice shots of the lake and boat ride.

  7. Ahhhhh....drinking and driving a vessel again. Yup, used to be able to do that when I was younger....but those stupid Sea-doo operators screwed that up for all of us. As your aware, it's "zero tolerance" for the Captain in Canada.....
It's certainly a fuel issue with the motor. Make sure the gas line from the fuel tank to the motor does not have an air leak....they usually leak around the fittings at both(or either) end of the "bulb" where it is "clamped" inline....or it's water in the gas as suspected.

    1. Yep, totally aware of the "zero tolerance". Pretty much the same rules as driving a car. As Chris says below, here you are responsible yourself and your actions.

    1. Nice to have a boat but I always think you spent more time fixing them than enjoying them.

  9. You gotta love Mexico, be responsible for yourself and your actions. Looks like it was a fun day!

    1. Yep, we love that idea, that's the way it should be.
