Call the fire brigade!

Found out yesterday that being campground manager also means I'm on the fire brigade! Not officially of course, but a call came through the office that there was an "uncontrolled fire" burning about 3 kms (1.7 miles) from the campground.

They asked if I could bring our fire nozzle hose attachment. This was around 6pm and we were just getting supper ready. No problem though, and I hopped in the truck and drove over. Saw the smoke from a distance, and when I arrived it was really just an oversized grass fire at the side of the road. They had called a nearby farmer who has a water pumping truck and by the time he showed up the fire had spread quickly and was now engulfing some small trees.

Fire!

Spreading.

Putting out the flames.

Almost done. More steam than smoke at this point.

It took the four of us about a half an hour to put out the fire. We were lucky that it spread fairly close to the road because the hose wasn't really that long. Interestingly, this fire was on Indian reserve land where 1,800 people live and the actual village is only a couple of miles away. I asked one of the fellows if they don't have a fire truck on the reserve and he said yeah, I'm sure they do but trust me, it was quicker to put it out ourselves! Turns out that people up here in the country just do what needs to be done.

Our second campers arrived yesterday morning. We were just finishing cleaning up their site because we knew they were coming in. First thing they said was "wow, our campsite hasn't looked this good in over two years!" That's exactly the kind of response we're hoping to get from people! This was one of the sites that had been badly damaged from the spring runoff so we had put lots of work into it. Glad they were happy!

We got the water running to the rest of the campground and the main shower/washroom tested for leaks and to make sure that the showers were all working properly. They are coin operated showers, so I wanted to make sure that if you're paying for a shower that they are working good! And, we got the main dock installed as well now that the ice is off the lake. Things are coming together, but there's still a lot to do between now and next Friday when everybody comes in for the long weekend.

On another note...Happy Anniversary to us! 29 years ago today we signed the papers and made it official!

And of course Happy Mother's Day to all the Moms out there!

  15. I'm a little late in reading my recent blogs - Happy Mother's Day to Ruth and Happy 29th Anniversary to you both. I'm happy to read that visitors are appreciating all the hard work you've both done. It certainly looks like you've got summer employment for as long as you want it! I'm on the last leg of my current adventure - will be in Roseville in a couple of days. And, I can't wait to get started on the next adventure! First of all, though, is get Daphne Dolphin cleaned up, revamped and prepared for whatever's coming up. May see you in Canada this Summer!
