Apparently the inmates come in every spring for two days. I had them cutting down dead trees, and clearing brush. Stuff I really don't want to do myself, although the whole episode did make more work for us. But, they got a lot accomplished.
The guard is the guy in the middle.
They bring all of their own equipment, but they borrowed quite a bit of the campground stuff too. Because of the clearing of one culvert, I had to lend them a few extra shovels.
It was a warm afternoon and they were doing some hard work.
Here's another one of the convi...Wait a minute! That's Ruth. She's hard at work too!
Tough work cutting grass on a slope!
Yesterday was grass cutting day. We've got to get ourselves into a schedule where we cut a little bit every day because even with 6 different lawn mowers and 3 different weed eaters (don't ask...) it's hard work getting it all done in one day.
The convicts departed about 4:00pm. They had only arrived at 10:00am, so not quite a full days work. They were supplied hamburgers in our restaurant for lunch, so they had a good meal. They put in a solid five hours or so, and got quite a bit done.
They cut down three large trees and cut up most of the thick stuff. Still, it's going to be quite a bit of work for Ruth and I to get rid of the leftover branches etc.
Had Philip and Wendy over for lasagna supper, and then sat out at their campfire again for an hour or so.
Another blue sky and sunshine day starting out there! Can't believe the great weather we've been having the last two weeks. Perfect!
Nice to have that extra help around the campground, getting the hard jobs done.
ReplyDeleteBest pace yourself cutting the grass it is never ending that's for sure.
It is nice to have that extra help and I am sure the imates enjoy being outdoors.
DeleteThe county we work for also uses prisoners to help with splitting wood that is sold in the campgrounds. They seem to appreciate getting to work in the outdoors and putting in an honest day's work. Great programs!
ReplyDeleteWe agree with you, it is a great program and good use of the taxpayers money.
DeleteThanks again for the great lasagna, as everybody has said before Ruth you are a great cook and at long last we got to enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteGlad that you and Phil enjoyed it. Thank you so much for coming up here and visiting with us. We enjoyed our time with you and hope to see you back here again sometime this summer.
DeleteWow, lasagna, I know it was good. Ruth made it!
ReplyDeleteIt is a great idea to have the convicts do some work outside. Good use of taxpayer money and helps in the rehab.
Thanks Chris!
DeleteI agree with living.boondockingmexico. I think there could be lots of ways convicts could be productive in society while serving time. It is important for all to build self-confidence in a positive rather than a negative way. It looked from the photos like they were really into the work too.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious though, did you have advanced notice of their arrival and plan? I think it might have ben more work for you if it wasn't planned.
And, that girl, Ruth, is powerful with that lawnmower! Great job, Ruth!
Yes, we had advance notice, someone on the Board of Directors set it all up. All Kevin had to do was figure out what work he wanted them to do.
DeletePoor Ruth. Look at the header photo...she is working so hard.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea using those guys. What a big help!
That was hard work!
DeleteAt least the convicts can be off duty.....who's the prisoner?
ReplyDeleteSuggest the convicts return in mid-October and rake some leaves!
ReplyDeleteHa! Best idea I've heard today!
DeleteI could use a few convicts to wash polish and wax our motorhome. everything that you can get other people to do for you is just more that you don't have to do yourself woohoo
