Booked!

Well, just like the white pelicans, we will be flying too!

Not only to Namibia...first, we had to get to Halifax.

Our daughter and her family live in Nova Scotia and she's due with our second grandchild in early September. So of course we want to spend some time with them before heading to warmer climates. We don't ever book flights this far in advance, but sometimes a deal comes along that's too good to pass up.

So we booked a one way flight with Porter Airlines from Ottawa to Halifax on October 15th. Only $157 each, taxes included.

I know that doesn't sound like a GREAT deal to some Europeans and Americans...but here in Canada where taxes are high and airlines are highly regulated, $157 each is a great deal.

Now we just have to figure our way from Halifax to New York City.

Not a bad weekend here. At least the rains have stopped, but the water is still rising. We had to move the main dock in so that the boaters could still use the boat launch area properly. That was a bit of a job, but we got it done.

You can just barely see the top of a 6 foot culvert that supplies water flow to our side of the lake. When we arrived here, you could pretty much ride a canoe through it! Not so much now.

The water pouring out the other side. We think the culvert has buckled in the middle somewhere!

This is where some of the cabin owners normally have their evening campfire. That's their firewood under the orange tarp!

This will be our last peaceful week. July 1st (Canada Day) long weekend is next weekend, and the kids get out of school this week. It's going to get very busy around here for the next two months!

  1. Being busy will help speed the time until you get to see that new grandbaby and then your new adventure.

    1. It sure will but we also don't want to rush our lives away. We will enjoy each day as it comes.

  2. I agree that business makes the time fly when you're excited about a great upcoming adventure. And, it sure sounds like you're going to be REALLY busy. As I've read of your experiences at Sturgeon Lake it's amazing all the interesting, troubling, wonderful, happy things that have happened in your lives. Life really is such an adventure.

    1. Yes, there is always something different here. The sky is ever changing, the wildlife we see, the different people we encounter and even our work changes from one day to the next. As you say life is an adventure.

    1. Hi Donna, some school districts have year long school but for the majority of schools summer holidays start at the end of June and go until the first Monday after Labour Day weekend in September. It has always been that way even when I went to school. High schools get out around the middle of June and colleges and universities it is generally at the beginning of May.

  5. Grandbabies are the grandest! Trips to Africa come a little behind the grand. What an eventful year you are having.

  6. Hello Kevin & Ruth ~~
I'm an American who lives in Mexico and your plane tickets sound like a really good price to me!

The trip to Namibia is making me pretty jealous, especially since a couple on my forum recently visited there & did a fabulous photo report on it. If you're interested: http://anyportinastorm.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=southafrica&action=display&thread=6493&page=1

    1. Thank you for the link Bixaorellana, the photos are amazing! We are getting more excited than ever now. I am sure Kevin will be in touch with these people to see what other information he can aquire or if he has questions that they may be able to answer.

As for our plane tickets from Ottawa to Halifax, they are really only $57 each the other $100 each is for all the different taxes that are piled in there, all in all we are pretty happy with the prices.

  7. I'm glad to see all this come together. By the time you finish your stint at Sturgeon, you will be ready for a well-deserved rest.

    1. It's getting there but there is still so much to work out.

I'm not so sure we will be resting a whole lot when we are finished up here at the campground but at least it won't be so labour intensive. Our muscles will be happy for a break that is for sure.

  8. What are you going to do with the little blue car when you fly away on your adventures?

    1. When we are finished up here at the campground we will be driving the little blue car back to Ottawa. We will put it back into storage as we had originally paid to have it stored for 2 years but kept it there for only 1 year so we still have one more year to use up.

  9. The little blue car came to my mind too. Sounds like a good plan coming into shape. You two do manage to come up with lots of bargain travel. I'd have to spend my life on line to manage it. Clearly I need some lessons.

    1. It is starting to come together but it will take time for all the pieces to fall into place.

Kevin has learned which sites to go to now which helps speed things up, also air travel in Canada is pretty limited so it's doesn't take to long to compare prices.

  10. Nice ticket prices. I'm going to have you take care of my plane reservations from now on. ;c)

    1. There are really only three airlines that travel from Ottawa to Halifax so it really wasn't too hard. In the States it would take a bit longer, there is a little more competition to check out.
