Just to clarify...

Reader Sherry asked some questions in her comment yesterday on the blog. Oh, and Sherry, the park we visited yesterday was a National Park, not a Provincial Park.

The campsites in this particular National Park are all unserviced, but each park is different and you'd have to look up the park you're interested in visiting to get some accurate details. You can buy an annual pass valid for Cape Breton Highlands National Park in Nova Scotia for half price if you do it before June 30th, so that's your best bet if your going to be in the park for more than two nights.

Sherry thought we had a typical "workamper" type of job, where you normally work 20 or so hours per work per week in exchange for a full service campsite.

No, this is a full time job, with a full time salary. I am on duty 24/7, while Ruth's contract essentially allows her to work minimum 40 hours per week, but with allowance to do more than that if the work is there to be done.

I do not get regular days off. In fact, I would expect that I won't get days off at all during July and August, but we knew that coming into it. No worries, I get lots of days off in the winter (smile).

Oh, and Sherry, we did a lot of boondocking in Nova Scotia back in the April, May, June period of 2011 so maybe you want to go back to our archives and look at some of the great spots we found to stay overnight for free back then.

Ruth has almost finished trimming and cutting up the brush in our boat trailer parking area. It's actually part of our park entrance so you see it when you come in. Nice to have it looking better!

This was taken June 6th.

And yesterday.

Meanwhile, I graded the road that leads to the west cabins, and I'll do the lakeside road and fill some potholes today, if the rain holds off! Had a big thunderstorm roll through early this morning with lots of loud cracks of thunder! I also installed the base of some new digger toys we bought for the playground. I'll get some photos of them today if the concrete is dry enough to finish installing them.

Our beaver friends were back on shore again last night...

Heading back into the lake.

We dropped back to 3rd place yesterday in the contest. If you have a facebook account, we really need your help now! There's only a day and a half to go, and we need a top five finish!

Here's how to do it...click the link. It will bring you to a facebook page. Accept the application. Accept the fact that they get access to your friend list, etc. Standard facebook procedure to limit illegal voting. Then, find the picture titled "Drab Landscape". There are five yellow stars beside the picture. Click on the star to the far RIGHT to award us with five points!

If your points don't register, please try again in a couple of hours. You're allowed one vote every 24 hours...thanks everyone!

  1. Well, I'm clicking away at the fifth star every day - hope it's successful. Boy, Kevin and Ruth, you guys are going to be body builder champs by the end of Summer!
I love all the stories of animal sightings and experiences. I'm truly an animal lover. Right now I'm sitting on my bed with my laptop and Lacy, Lincoln and Eleanor right here with me.
    Love your blog kids....mp

    1. Thanks so much for your help Mary-Pat, we hope it will be successful too!

We certainly are getting a good work out, don't need to worry about spending money on a gym membership that is for sure. We love seeing the wildlife and are hoping to see more as the season progresses. Give Lacy, Lincoln and Eleanor a good pet for us.

  2. Thanks so much for the answers to all my questions. Guess I'd better get on it and get a pass for Cape Breton. Hope I can do it on line. I love those beavers even if they are pesky.

    1. No problem Sherry, remember if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to send us an email.

Those beavers are around just about every night. They are fun to see up close like that.

  5. Your hard work is making this campground a super star. They are going to be crying when you leave. You're doing the work of a dozen workampers!

    1. That's what we are hoping for. The local newspaper was around the other day, taking pictures, they are doing an article on the campground.

I doubt that they will be crying because we will most likely be back again next year.

  7. Hopefully, if you want to return to the same place in the summer, this could be it. Looks like you guys have put a lot into the place after years of neglect. I'm sure they are paying you well but a bonus might be in order :)

    1. We wouldn't say years of neglect, we are just doing a lot more than the last managers did, although I think they did some work because it was even worst before they came. A bonus would be lovely!
