We knew that our return flight from Africa arrives in New York City on March 8. And somehow, we wanted to make our way back to our motorhome which is parked near Guadalajara, Mexico.
The problem is that there's no easy way to get from New York City to Guadalajara. So you have to be creative!
The major flight search engines don't always get it right when it comes to international travel. The problem is that they very often don't include choices that use the local carriers in the country that you're visiting.
For example, all of the flight search engines say that the cheapest way ($325) is to fly New York City to Los Angeles and then LA to Guadalajara. That's a ridiculous waste of time and with the layover in LA it becomes a 19 hour trip! Or, they put you through Mexico City, but then it's more expensive ($454).
Doesn't make sense to fly through LA.
We've flown with Volaris twice before. Once to Las Vegas, and once to Chicago. Both times, it was because they had some kind of great sale taking place.
Well this time, they had some flights at 80% off if you could fly on a Tuesday or Wednesday. So I booked us a flight from Cancun to Guadalajara for only $41 each...that's the total price!!
So, we are flying New York to Guadalajara for a total price of $219 each. And we have the added benefit of an 8 day stopover in Cancun!
Parked up with friends in Cancun.
We've been to Cancun before. We were there with the motorhome in December of 2008 and we stayed with a couchsurfer host. We've been wanting to get back for a visit so this was the perfect opportunity. Carmen has already said we can stay for the whole eight days if we wish, but we're hoping to also visit Cozumel where Kent and Lynn have bought a second home. They're the people we stayed with in Denver.
So, all of this trip planning has us with itchy feet! We've never booked flights this far in advance! But, we're already a third of the way through August so time is passing quickly. Not that we're trying to rush things along, but we're counting the days until we can get on the road!
Sunset over the fields of canola.
A great deal and more places to see, you are really planning in advance.
ReplyDeleteKevin loves to find the best deals!
DeleteWill you be my travel agent?

DeleteBEAUTIFUL PHOTO!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Que Vida!
DeleteYou two are the only two people I know that know where they will be able a year in the future.
ReplyDeleteAwesome header photo.
This is actually very unusual for for us, half the time we don't know where we will be in one month's time, we may have an idea but that's about it for us. It is funny to already be planning for March.
DeleteI like it! Good for you guys. It pays to 'know the ropes' and consider other ways to get to where you need to go. Looking forward to your travels after the camp hosting is done.
ReplyDeleteThis is the type of thing that Kevin loves to do on the computer. He knew there would be a cheaper route it just took a little time to figure it out. We are looking forward to our travels after we are finished up here as well.
DeleteVolaris has been adding more flights within Mexico during the last while for very reasonable rates.
ReplyDeleteWe love traveling with Volaris, haven't had a issue with them yet.
DeleteThat is a stunning header picture! Just gorgeous. And what an amazing price for those tickets. I'm with Paul, will you be my travel agent too??
ReplyDeleteThank you Sherry, we think it is a pretty good picture too but Kevin said he still wants to try a few different settings and features with this new camera so hopefully we will get some more stunning pictures in the future.
DeleteIt took Kevin a while to figure it all out but that is what he loves to do.
You are going to have such a great time in Cancun! I was wondering where you'd spend the nights. How cool that you have friends to share this with. I can't wait for all of this adventure to begin! Grace (in Tucson)
ReplyDeleteEven though it is a touristy spot, I know that we will find unique things to do and it will be so nice to see our friend Carmen again as well as going to Cozumel to visit with Kent and Lynn for a few days. I have been to Cozumel before but Kevin hasn't.
DeleteBeautiful header photo!
ReplyDeleteThank you Gay and Joe!

Thanks Karen. We heard of no problems or issues with the last contest and it was done the same way. Once the contest is over you can just "unlike" the page, although they do show some beautiful photos on their page. Thanks for helping us out.
DeleteWell thought out. Have often done a similar thing ourselves by starting at the airport we want to arrive at and looking who flies in there and from where.
ReplyDeleteWhat a super deal AND super picture of the pelicans. They must make you think of Mexico! That's a good thing! :o)
